Thanks for this information. Being a model railroader, such philatelic items cross over to the other hobby for me!

Welcome to Stamporama!
Is it common for your covers to be divided into quadrants and then cancelled in each box? That's an interesting cover.
Hi Sally, the postal officials used to draw a "+" across both the front and back of envelopes which are "Registered Post". Here is the front side of that envelope.
I didn't know that. Thanks for the response.
Welcome Bruce. I'm a fan of railway cancels also. It is a very interesting area to collect. I bet there is quite a story to be told behind the cover addressed to the Proprietor of the Mercury News in Hobart.
Regards ... Tim.
Hi from Johannesburg. I have recently started collecting railway cancels from the Cape Government Railway period, Midland Line. This line ran from Port Elizabeth to De Aar. Cancels from this line also featured "TPO Up" and "TPO Down" on board cancels. Some stations and sidings along this line had a brief existence. During the initial construction period the railway line was located along the low-lying ground, following rivers and streams to avoid the extra cost of constructing tunnels. Later modernization changed this, with tunnels being dug/blasted and shortening the travelling distances, leading to some original stations being a kilometer or more away from the new line. My grandfather was a steam loco driver on this route and surrounding branch lines from around the mid to late 1920's until about the late 1950's early 60's. Looking for letter cards, covers or post cards which were cancelled along this line pre-1920. Should any members have such items please be kind enough to load a picture beneath. Best regards Bruce Vincent - Johannesburg, South Africa
