My family is taking a vacation to Peru and thought about trying to find places I can match to stamps. We'll hit some of the usual spots: Lima, Cuscos, Machu Pichu, Nazca Lines. But we've also got a few unplanned days, so excursions are possible.

My Peru collection is thin and really only goes up to 1965 anyway, but I do have the 2013 Scott Catalog. So I can flip through the album or catalog and look for attractive stamps. I hoping someone familiar with Peru and its stamps might suggest a set or two that would help my search. We've only got 11 days including travel, and I know the Missus doesn't want to spend a lot of time "stamp collecting," so a handful is all I need.

Had an idea some years ago--to collect the 1934 US National Park stamps by visiting each of the sites and try to recreate the image on film. In the November 2014 issue of The American Philatelist, a nice article by Paul Malan called "Mount Rainier Revisited" made me aware of just how hard that would be! But we want to travel, so why not.

https://stamps.org/userfiles/file/AP/contents/contents_11_14.pdf

I hope that the result will be some special pages in my album that each have a stamp next to a picture of my family by the same image. Even if it is only one, and even if the angle is not quite right, it will be worth the effort! Thanks.

re: Traveling to Peru--Looking for "Stamp Pictures"

Hello Steve,
EXCELLENT IDEA!

I have been doing that for a long time now. First of all, if you are interested in matching stamps to postcards that's one topic. If you wish to use stamps in a Foreign Travel Scrap Book, that's another topic. If you wish to just match stamps to your places you are going to visit that's still another topic.

You must have plenty of time to gather your stamps. You will not have time to stop at a post office during your tours, and, secondly, chances are the post office will not have the stamps you need.

Solution: you must 1)get postage stamps from the Approvals or from the Auctions, 2) obtain stamps from a reputable local dealer, 3) buy stamps from eBay.com from reputable dealers.

When my wife and I visited Turkey, we went to the Virgin Mary's home (a 2000 year old place). St. John the Evangelist found the safest place for Our Lady in a mountain top some distance way from Ephesus in Kusadasi. (Remember the Letters to the Ephesians by St. Paul?) I wanted to match stamps to historical places. I had knowledge that Turkey had issued stamps a while back commemorating Meryem Ana. As Mary's name is spoken of in the Qur'an, Moslems visit the site. We were absolutely moved to see hundreds of Moslem Turkish children visiting the holy site and being taught by their teachers about Mary and her house on the mountain. I purchased my stamps and took them with me. However, being out of circulation, I had to find current stamps to affix to my postcards. Fortunately, being a tourist place, Ephesus (where the Roman ruins are located) had a small area to purchase postage stamps. I mailed the postcards from the port of Kusadasi. Here is one of the stamps I purchased on eBay.com:
Image Not Found

It took some time, but I was successful. On our trip to Santorini I carried with me Santorini postage stamps I had bought online. The stamps matched the place we were visiting.

I hope you can find your Peruvian stamps. I have been using stampworld.com online catalog to give me an idea of the year of issue, the denomination, and, of course, the image required.

Right now I am gathering stamps from Barcelona, Spain, Cyprus, Malta, Rhodes, Greece, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Oman and UAE for our upcoming trips. It takes effort, but my postcards are going to be great, and my wife's trip scrapbook will be enhanced by the beautiful stamps.

Good luck, and good hunting!!!

re: Traveling to Peru--Looking for "Stamp Pictures"

There are several nice scenic sets containing stamps that would fit your purpose nicely.
The first pictoral set is shown below and it has many stamps you could use. Most of these are in Lima: 1 cent = Bologne Monnument, 5 cent = Statue of Bolivar, 10 cent = Lima city hall, 20 cent = Lima school of medicine, 50 cent = Lima Post Office, 1 sol = Santa Beatrix race track, 2 sol = Columbus Monument. I would imagine most of these are still standing but might take sometime to find. There are also several other sets, mostly in the 30's that have other good choices. You can see all of it's stamps thru 1970 here:

re: Traveling to Peru--Looking for "Stamp Pictures"

Hello Steve,
I lived in Peru from 1965 to the end of 1967, but the memories of that great country are still vivid in my mind.
I will include in this post a few images I obtained from stampworld.com the online stamps catalog and will offer a small explanation.
Image Not Found Peruvian coffee is excellent. You will enjoy it. Néctar de Café is coffee extract, like our expresso with hot water, or Americano. However the taste is unrivaled
Image Not Found. Machu Picchu is Peru's ancient Inca Capital
Image Not Found. Cusco is famous for its square stone walls. Fascinating
Image Not Found. Peruvian cuisine is exquisite. Enjoy with your coffee
Image Not Found. You may want to visit Lima's Gold Museum where the Inca gold pieces that survived the Spaniard's expropriation are shown. There is an extensive set of Gold of Peru postage stamps. These are some of the most beautiful postage stamps issued by the Peruvian Postal authority
Image Not Found. Here is an image of a typical Peruvian drink: Pisco Sour. It is wonderful, in moderation, of course.
Image Not Found There are archeological sites all over Peru. Here is an image of the Sun and Moon temples (Mochica Civilization) archeological site in Trujillo. The Incas were the predominant ruling class, but there were many other cultures and civilizations. Peru has issued many stamps celebrating this cultural diversity.

Lima is a dynamic, exciting cosmopolitan city. There are many beautiful places to visit: Lima's centenary Roman Catholic cathedral, Plaza San Martin, The Presidential Palace, Miraflores and the Pacific coastline, Rio Rimac, the Plaza de Toros in Acho.

You will enjoy your visit to Peru. I hope this post has helped.

re: Traveling to Peru--Looking for "Stamp Pictures"

Many thanks for the well-thought out suggestions. I can see this will be somewhat of an experiment as I don't have a ton of time beforehand to carefully lay things out. If I take several dozen images of stamps with me, I think I will be able to find several that work.

As a side note, I learned recently that Machu Pichu wasn't discovered until 1911. That would explain the lack of early Peruvian stamps depicting the ruined city. So much to learn, so little time!

Again, thanks for the great ideas!

Hello Steve,
A curious stamp fact. This is France's commemorative postage stamp for the 2024 Olympic Games.
The interesting fact is that Peru--to my knowledge--has not issued a postage stamp celebrating Lima's Roman Catholic Cathedral.
Well, at least France has issued a stamp with two drawings of their iconic symbols: the Eiffel Tower and Lima's Roman Catholic cathedral.

Another fact about Lima's Cathedral: when I lived in Peru I visited the Catacombs under this ancient building. I don't know if it is still open or if tourists are allowed in as they are allowed in Paris, France... ???...
