I am creating a WW set of Albums. I have a dilemma. My collection is 1840 to 1949.

My question is how to create it. I have six Scott Junior International Albums that I will be taking apart and creating my own pages.

My dilemma is how to set it up.

Thoughts:
1. Divide it into Continents - creating pages for each country and colony within each Continent.
2. Alphabetical Order - dilemma here is the fact that countries identified in my SG "The Ideal Postage Stamp Album" of 1914 album will be consolidated with my 1943 Scott Albums and countries changed tremendously during this time period. A good example is that neither has a separate section for Ethiopia, they are simply housed under "Abyssinia." Despite my 1914 album identifying Abyssinia which was later divided into Ethiopia and Eritrea, it has a separate section for Eritrea. Canadian Provinces are spread out alphabetically in my 1943 albums which consolidate British Empire with "Foreign" whereas the 1914 has two separate albums British Empire is Vol 1 (I do not have this one) and Worldwide "aka Foreign" is Vol 2.

I want to do a short write-up on each country during the time frame of my collection.

Ideally I would create a section for Canada and then divide it into Provinces and then the Dominion. Likewise with my German collection I would create a Germany section and then divide it into States, Confederation, Empire and Third Reich. The same would be true of Russia - Empire and USSR.

There are so many periods of occupations in almost every country, I'm baffled as to how to actually set up the albums.

If you were in my position, would you create it according to Continent? If so, how would you create the terms of "Asia" which in these albums include countries we would consider Middle East (is this part of Asia?)

All advice is welcome as I set off on this new adventure. I would like to keep it as "old country" as I can which is why I am leaning towards creating it by continent rather than alphabetical. For the most part, none of these countries gained independence from colonial occupation during my collection period although there is a a great deal of cross-over with war occupations.

I am really looking forward to creating these albums which is my planned focus for the next few months. Many of my countries will be "complete" as the time frame is limited (with the exception of extremely high values which will never reach my paws).

The continent system seems to be the most ideal set-up as I can then place within those - such as North America, all of Canada as stated in the above explanation. Of course then I have difficulties with the United States because I have countries that fall under the US during a certain time frame but then also Central America.

Since I'm starting from scratch and creating my own pages, once I settle on a system, it will be ideal.

Rather than having North America, perhaps it would be better to create it as The Americas which would then allow me to create countries that once were under the US but later became its own country, such as Cuba.

I welcome all advice as this is quite an interesting experience. I know many of you have created WW collections, for those of you who have not used a pre-printed page set-up, how did you decide the method to create your albums?

I only have been looking at a region. I use Steiner pages and just organize like I want.

The countries include Singapore, Malaya/Malaysia, Labuan, Sarawak, Brunei, North Borneo, etc. Unlike Scott's catalogue order, I sorted the states in one continuous group and not by overall country (Federation, Union, etc).

re: Creating an Album from Scratch - How to Identify Countries

I prefer to group by sections, each section being named after the name of the country at the point where my collection stops.
Sections are arranged alphabetically, with each section containing the constituent postal issuing authorities in alphabetic/date order followed by the country itself.

So for example my South Africa section (which is large enough to occupy a complete album on its own) contains in order, Cape, Natal, New Republic, Orange Free State, Transvaal, Union of South Africa, Republic of South Africa.
Here the constituents are arranged alphabetically, but then I switch to date order with the Republic following the Union.

However it is difficult to create a hard and fast rule. For example my Rhodesia section consists of British South Africa Company, Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, Rhodesia & Nyasaland, Rhodesia.
For the most part this follows a date sequence rather than alphabetic. Fortunately I don't collect post Colonial Africa, else I would have to somehow integrate Zambia and Zimbabwe into that lot as well.

Within each country or constituent stamps are arranged by date. I never understood the logic of grouping into postals, airmails, semi-postals (which in actual fact primarily serve a postal function) etc. and even less so splitting into commemoratives and definitives, as all fulfil the same purpose of conveying a letter or parcel through the mail. I don't collect revenues, however if I did, in-line with their non-postal usage, I would probably keep them in a separate section from the postage stamps.

My collection is arranged alphabetically by country. I used to have it split out by US, British, and the rest. Then I went by continent. It is easier for me to have it from A to Z with the US and UN at the front.

Collecting the first 100 years, you have a chance to do something a little bit different. Many country names were different up to the end of World War II. You could use the old country names to keep the collection historically accurate, especially since you're going to be doing a write up on each country / collecting area (not all were countries; many were plebiscites).

re: Creating an Album from Scratch - How to Identify Countries

I've decided to go by continent. Then I'll go alphabetically from there. With the short write-up, there will be a reference to what colonies, occupations and ultimate independence from colonisation date with the modern name listed at that point. I think it will have more of a personal touch this way. I'm going to arrange the stamps by year, leaving room for missing stamps of a set or individuals which I may obtain in the future.

As the majority of these stamps are all previously hinged, I'm going to stick with just hinges with a simple border so I can mount them using a ruler. I've done this with several other collections that are in mounts. Simply stating the year of issue at the beginning of a line handwritten will provide me enough information to catalogue them.

My ability to create elaborate album pages is no longer possible with my extremely limited eyesight (I can only see my stamps individually by a high powered magnifier connected to my tv or up close within 2" of my eyes). It will also help my friend guide me as I mount the stamps.

Thank you all for your insight and ideas. They've been quite helpful.

re: Creating an Album from Scratch - How to Identify Countries

So I've been going through the 2 sets of 1943 Scott Jr Internationals and also my newest acquisition The Ideal Postage Stamp Album (1917 - I believe). My goal is to consolidate them so that the 6 Scott Volumes will become my personal creation of Big Blue 1840-1949.

I've created a basic template for all the pages and they will go into page protectors which I have begun to punch in as 2 post. My 3 hole punch has the ability to change to various sizes thank goodness so I was able to set it up for the 7" 2 post. They fit fabulously into the Scott International Albums.

Here is a sample of the template I'm using. I wanted a quadrille style so the print is extremely faint - highly unlikely to transfer to the stamps because it is hardly visible but enough that I won't need to constantly use a ruler for every line and my stamps will be neatly hinged (yes, hinged - 95% are previously hinged so I'm not going to spend tons of time cutting mounts when I can save that for my MNH specialty collections). I will be printing the album pages on the same pages I use for my other collections which is a parchment design which hides the quadrille to the point that once the stamps are mounted, flipping through the albums on one's lap, the quadrille won't even be noticeable.

Image Not Found

Very simple design and then in front of each country I plan to create a introduction that will not only cover the time period but also prior to and post-collection era. My goal is to also find out more information about the postal service of each country to include in the introduction.

The collection will be divided into continents. Looking through the 1943 Scott International, I have no idea whose ideas were to put it together. There really is no rhyme or reason for inserting various countries on the bottom of a page just because there was space for it. If I am looking under "B" then why is there a totally unrelated "E" country/colony on the bottom of the page? I realise this album set was produced during WWII and paper was scarce (why they created a 1943 edition still eludes me), but at least give it some flow. I've still been looking and thus far my two copies of the 1943 edition are the only ones I've found - nothing else has popped up on eBay whenever I get a chance to look. I got these through my regular dealer and he's never seen this edition either. So I'm planning to still keep the cover page for it and for those albums that are missing a cover page, I'll photocopy the original and include it in the beginning of each album.

Thus begins a new and exciting adventure.

re: Creating an Album from Scratch - How to Identify Countries

I like your template! I have experimented with similar layouts, but have made the quadrille lines too heavy for my liking. Well, I'll just have to try again.

As for the albums "without rhyme nor reason", I still keep a similar one for nostalgic reasons. It is a worldwide album ending around 1936, and while the then independent countries were at least grouped by continent, sometimes one finds images of several countries, say, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico, on the same page. I guess it was an album designed for younger or less advanced collectors, and the publishers did not expect many of them filling the pages at all. Thus, they could save some paper and still claim they had published a worldwide album. Anyway, it was something of an adventure trip around the world while sitting my the desk to bring some semblance of order in this collection ;-) - and every now and then I still find a stamp to fill an empty space.

For the newer stamps, I mostly make my own pages on A4 paper and order them by continent and then by country in alphabetical order. If the name of a country has changed, but the territory has remained mostly the same, I still continue adding pages with the new name at the top after those with the old name.

I use Word to create my pages. Just create a table and then go to table properties and click the pen colour. I use the 3rd grey from the top. Then highlight the table, click no borders and then click the one that shows full all borders. You just add rows until you've hit the bottom of the page.

I hope this helps. I'm sure it works similarly with other programs like WordPerfect and Open Office.

Chris,

Very nice album page. Semi-postals do sound like a challenging topical that would provide quite a wide ranging collection as well as lots of opportunity for doing customized page layouts that would be particularly meaningful.
