I would like to say thanks to a few special veterans:

1) Robert Vick - born ca. 1752-56 Duplin County, North Carolina - REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIER - my grandfather's grandfather's grandfather.

2)Milton Stewart Colp - Civil War soldier from Illinois - my grandfather's great-grandfather.

3)My grandfather, who served in the Navy in WWI

4)My father, pictured, who served in the Merchant Marines in WWII because the Navy didn't believe him when he tried to lie about his age to join the fight after Pearl Harbor. Born in 1925, he was only 16, but the Merchant Marines took him. Sadly, Merchant Marines were not recognized as veterans in many corners for a long time, but happily that changed before my father died, and I remember fondly an Air Force General in our church greeting my father on Veteran's day and thanking him for his service. Sadly, too many Merchant Marines and WACs and others passed before their contributions were recognized.

5)My brother. Drafted during Viet Nam. Served honorably in the Army for 22 years! Wounded in Iraq.

6)My niece. She was on a supply mission with several subordinates in Kosovo when their convoy was attacked and they wound up in a fire-fight. She didn't back down and the enemy retreated.

I am proud of each and every one of you and I thank you for your service.

I also thank the MILLIONS of non-family members that served. We lounge under the protection you fight and die for every day.

HAPPY VETERANS DAY!!!

re: Veteran's Day

Times sure have changed, Lars.

I met friends for a free lunch today. TGI Friday's this time. We've been doing this every Veterans Day in recent years. A different restaurant each year. Very gracious hosts. I don't know that anyone was doing much to honor Vets in this more personal way on Veterans Day in 1971—or in 1946 when Dad came home from the Pacific.

The media tend to portray a different sort of America.

re: Veteran's Day

My grandfather served in WWI. My father served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He used to joke with other people following his year in Vietnam that he served in one war per son. I had to register for the draft but it ended in my 18th year--I likely would have gone to Vietnam.
I have enjoyed the many news stories this year and past years when the various news channels featured stories about veterans who served in the various branches of the military over the years. Many of the stories featured are quite touching. I am always surprised by the stories in the media about MIA members who were finally identified after many years and brought home so that surviving family could find some peace. We are fortunate to live in the United States protected by our military and our free press.

Image Not Foundstampme,

I was in a similar situation. My dad served in Vietnam in the 60's and I did register for the draft in late 74/early 75 but the draft ended.

We were based on Okinawa from 70-74. Kadena AFB on Okinawa was the home of the KC-135s that refueled the B-52's that flew between Guam and Vietnam. B-52s were not allowed on Okinawa except when there was a typhoon at Guam due the danger of crashes.

Thanks Steve,
I just sent my application for the online shopping benefit. I only put in four years so I didn't qualify for shopping at the exchange on base.

No sales tax and free shipping on orders over $49 -- what's not to like?

I rarely go to the exchange any more as shopping online is a time saver (the closest exchanges are about 15+ miles away) and I'm less likely to buy a bunch of stuff I don't need.

re: Veteran's Day

What is nice is that in the U.S. generally, benefits given to veterans of the U.S. forces by commrcial entities are often offered to veterans of other nations. I know that cruise ships, for example owned by U.S. companies offer benefits to retired members of the UK armed forces.

To our shame we offer very poor service and aftercare to our own ( let alone overseas) ex-military. In fact much of the support for victims of PTSD and other injured soldiers comes from charitable sources. Fortunately the British public has deep pockets, and the recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, despite the tragedy has concentrated the mind of the public.

In fact our Armistice Day is observed with much more sincerity today than for many years toward the end of the last century. Obviously the centenary of World War 1 has ignited a flame, particularly in the light of the enormous casualties, which have been well documented in the media over the last 3 years, as well as the number of recent casualties, which again thanks to the media have been well reported. In the UK conflicts in Korea,Aden,Cyprus,Palestine,Oman,Kenya and the Balkans tend to be forgotten while the Falklands,Iraq and Afghanistan are well recognised. Northern Ireland is often ignored for political expediency, but the soldiers are just as dead, and the grief is just as real.
