Happy New Year to everybody! I am starting a new 2018 thread for anyone who would like to scan and show their worldwide revenue stamps, which can be some of the most beautiful, classic stamps. I will start with one block from my worldwide block collection, just for the joy of stamp collecting. I love the CROWN watermark along the right edge.

London Mayor's Court Revenues, 1880's. Most often perfin cancelled.
Below is a MNH Proof copy, one of my favourite pieces.

Edit: These were printed in Recess by Perkins Bacon and the types shown here were from the 1883 series. A further series was issued in 1902 with perf and value changes.

All very unusual (at least to me) and very interesting. Especially the "Mayor's Court" - how often do you come across that?

These have been GB/Colonies but I assume there are countries world-wide that issue the same - I would think USA in particular. Looking forward to seeing more examples.

Fiscal stamps of the short lived Boer Republic of Stellaland which less than two years after its founding was annexed in 1885 by the British and incorporated into British Bechuanaland.

The set consisted of nine denominations: 6d, 1s, 1s 6d, 2s, 2s 6d, 5s, 10s, £5, £10

The 5s and 10s with pen cancels

A group of four, 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s. Only the 5s has been cancelled again in pen.
This group is interesting for the JPM monogram overprint in violet. This overprint was applied to all stamps after a quantity of the stamps was stolen shortly after issue to prevent the stolen stamps from being used.

Two 1973 Jersey Revenue Stamps (Bailiff) overprinted in the same year 'Specimen' in Sans Serif lettering. Both Stamp and Overprint by Bradbury Wilkinson. The same designs (by Wyon & Co) had been in use since 1900 when they were also printed by Bradbury Wilkinson.
The £2 value shows the Corbiere Lighthouse.
The £1 value shows a scene (by Copley) of the 1781 Battle of Jersey.

- General revenue from Yugoslavia

- General revenue from Serbia

- Railway stamp from Denmark

- General revenue from Corrientes in Argentina

- Municipal revenue from Urbisaglia in Italy

I hope that helps. I'm off to bed now. Happy

Palestine- British Military Administration/Mandate.

1919-1920 Court Fee Revenues. 4 different series' and 2 of the types shown here. The difference being the watermark. 1). Script GvR Inverted or normal and 2). Block GvR Sideways reading up or down. Perf 11.
There are a number of varieties, some as indicated on the rather scarce Block of 8. I will endeavour to scan more colours/values later in the week.
These are quite an interesting Revenue issue and i am often finding something new.
The early Mily Admn/Mandate stamps were printed by the Survey department in Giza, Cairo, Egypt but I have no indication that these were. I have a couple of lists including Bale, but they don't give me the answer. If anyone has that information, please let me/us know, thanks.

Edit: I just realised the Red 200 Mils revenues are from the 4th series (currency change) and has Watermark No.2 (above). Oops !

Fascinating londonbus1! I look forward to see more of these. HappyHappyHappy

I'm intrigued by the lovely block of eight.

I've previously seen some of these stamps described on www.revrevd.com where the the Rev Revd seeks to identify a number of different versions of these stamps.

However, certain characteristics (different spellings of qirsh in Arabic, different sizes of brackets and different forms of lamed in Hebrew) that he identifies as representing different versions all seem to be present on this sheet when you compare the top-left stamp with the others.

Has the top-left stamp not been updated in this setting, or has there only been this one combined setting (with more than one type) or have I just misunderstood what's going on here? Happy

re: Worldwide Revenues

Nigel,

I don't know if I can help much with your queries as I am a bit of a novice with these and indeed Revenues in general. Just starting to get an interest now hence my enthusiasm for this thread !
I purchased a small lot of these Palestine Court Fee Revenues from a Flea Market stall in Tel Aviv about 2 years ago. I got him down to about 4 Shekels each (85p approx) and then got home, put them in the 'In' box and forgot about them.
So I am just starting to research. I have an old Bale Catalogue for Palestine and while it is great for flyspecking the postage stamps (it gives all known varieties up to the date of the catalogue), it does not give much info on the revenues, just a pretty basic list. I found that rather odd for such a good catalogue.
I have another list which has a bit more info but nothing about varieties, printings or settings. It does mention that there are 4 settings for each of the first two issues including the issue that has the Arabic 'qirsh' you mentioned (one dot, two dots) but that's all.
I hope to get back to that market sometime soon so I am hoping the seller is still around as he had lots of books and leaflets about stamps so maybe I might find something more detailed. (Also would like to pick up more stamps !! Winking).

The Springer Catalog is one of my favorites - always on the hunt for those type of items because there's some really odd stuff listed inside.

These are on the common end of the spectrum (roughly 20 cent items or less).
In order of how they are displayed here, they are Springer Catalog numbers (under the Taxpaid Revenues / "Class A Cigarettes" section): TA226, TA174, TA258, TA281, TA242

enjoy!

Great Britain.

In the 14th century, the Duke of Lancaster had such powers that a seperate justice system was set up in the Palatine of Lancaster (Lancashire). During the 19th century the justice system was mostly brought in line with the rest of the county although these revenues were still in use until 1971 !
Rough perf 12, each have letter and serial number. First issued in 1875. Cancelled by circular datestamp and Perfin.

Conquering the world one stamp at a time

re: Worldwide Revenues

Here are some interesting revenues I haven't found much information on. I know they are Spanish is origin and they are mentioned in the Forbin catalog, with the following text:

"We do not know if these stamps are official, the decree creating them could not find again. We do not know if it is more stamps for all Spain, provincial stamps, or even of private stamps."
(Google helped translate it from French to English)

But that's as much as I've found.
Anybody else seen these mentioned anywhere? I know Edifil put out a revenue catalog not too long ago, but I haven't been able to afford a copy yet.

I was walking along, minding my own business and, suddenly, there I was, back in The Golden Age of Nassau Street, when the streets were paved with stamps.

About the only thing cooler than finding a stepped-on pack of Uzbeki cigarettes bearing an Uzbeki revenue stamp was googling the bits on the side of the pack and finding-out that they were manufactured in South Korea.

Londonbus1 - nice bunch of Hong Kong revenues, thanks for sharing.

Scanned below is an Irish revenue I found in a box of stamps I am going through. Does anyone have a reference book that shows this stamp, as I am looking for the timespan it was used and a relative value. I have not found anything like it on eBay. Looks like the cancel says District Court Clerk Office, from some unknown town.

Thanks,

It's a District Court (An Chúirt Dúiche) revenue from the 1971 decimal currency set.

I don't have an up-to-date catalogue but in the 1996 Barefoot British Commonwealth Revenues catalogue it was priced at £2.50.

Hi sheepshanks,

"An Cuirc Duice, translates according to Google as " The Black Body" ?"

Two of the letters here that look like "c" have a dot on them which represents an aspirated sound, "ch" (as in Scots "loch" etc.)

The other one is actually the Irish form of the letter "t".

Google Translate manages to translate An Chúirt Dúiche successfully. Happy

I was pleased to pick up my first copy from the first general revenue issue of Thailand in 1883. It is the 1 tical value and shows the then king, Chulalongkorn. Waterlow & Sons must have been pleased with their work as they made small 9 stamp sheets to advertise their ability.

re: Worldwide Revenues

Here is an Indonesian revenue stamp used on an official extract of a birth record dated 20 February 1951:

Image Not Found

According to Barefoot, the stamp was issued in 1948 for use in the Dutch controlled areas. Indonesia had achieved independence at the end of 1949, but apparently they were still using these revenue stamps denominated in guilders in 1951. Originally the background was in red, but a few values were reprinted in 1949 with an orange background. This particular value with an orange background is not listed in Barefoot.

Here is the front of the full document. Note that it is in two languages, Indonesian and Dutch.

Cancelled by circular datestamp and Perfin.

re: Worldwide Revenues

Here are some interesting revenues I haven't found much information on. I know they are Spanish is origin and they are mentioned in the Forbin catalog, with the following text:

"We do not know if these stamps are official, the decree creating them could not find again. We do not know if it is more stamps for all Spain, provincial stamps, or even of private stamps."
(Google helped translate it from French to English)

But that's as much as I've found.
Anybody else seen these mentioned anywhere? I know Edifil put out a revenue catalog not too long ago, but I haven't been able to afford a copy yet.

re: Worldwide Revenues

Interesting revenues, rbpuzzles. Some of our experts on revenues have not been posting as much in the summer, but have patience, you may get an answer to your question someday. I will bump this thread to the top with a couple Hong Kong revenue blocks of six from my collection...

Got my first-cutting hay baled and in the barn, so I had some time to fix my scanner that stopped talking to my laptop (wirelessly) after a Windows 10 update, but there was a scanner "App" for that, so I am testing it out. I will share some old Iowa farmer checks with revenue stamps, from my collection. Life feels good today!

I was walking along, minding my own business and, suddenly, there I was, back in The Golden Age of Nassau Street, when the streets were paved with stamps.

About the only thing cooler than finding a stepped-on pack of Uzbeki cigarettes bearing an Uzbeki revenue stamp was googling the bits on the side of the pack and finding-out that they were manufactured in South Korea.

re: Worldwide Revenues

Bumping this thread back at you ikeyPikey. Are you sure that thing didn't fall out of an alien spacecraft and land on the sidewalk?? I think Darth Vader smoked ESSE Blacks. Nice find!

Thanks,
Linus

re: Worldwide Revenues

Nice looking stamp Linus.Happy

It's a District Court (An Chúirt Dúiche) revenue from the 1971 decimal currency set.

I don't have an up-to-date catalogue but in the 1996 Barefoot British Commonwealth Revenues catalogue it was priced at £2.50.

re: Worldwide Revenues

I picked up an envelope of maybe 200-300 Canadian revenues when I was selling at shows back in the 80's. Very heavy in tobacco strips like those at the top - many are folded and twice as long as those shown when unfolded.
Is there a catalog for these ??
Thanks for any help you can give me.

re: Worldwide Revenues

Hi sheepshanks,

"An Cuirc Duice, translates according to Google as " The Black Body" ?"

Two of the letters here that look like "c" have a dot on them which represents an aspirated sound, "ch" (as in Scots "loch" etc.)

The other one is actually the Irish form of the letter "t".

Google Translate manages to translate An Chúirt Dúiche successfully. Happy

I recently found this Puerto Rico revenue stamp in the five-cent bins at my local stamp shop, and I went to Wikipedia for more info on the seal shown in the center.

I was pleased to pick up my first copy from the first general revenue issue of Thailand in 1883. It is the 1 tical value and shows the then king, Chulalongkorn. Waterlow & Sons must have been pleased with their work as they made small 9 stamp sheets to advertise their ability.

Scroll down to the "Canadian Revenues" section.
The album may be downloaded as a PDF file, or as an AlbumEasy source file for those who would like to modify it.

re: Worldwide Revenues
