I am a bit of a "history geek" - over the past 50 years reading tons of books specifically on The Holocaust, WWI, WWII, Winston Churchill, etc. That has defined some of my stamp collecting interests (and vice versa).

My wife and I just finished Season 2 of the TV series "The Crown" on Netflix - and today watched the first 2 episodes of the BBC documentary "The Royal House of Windsor". Fascinating, if you like that sort of thing.

This interest was spurred on at Christmas, when my father-in-law's wife's dad gave me his collection of Winston Churchill books and (part of) his stamp collection (he's 96 and moving into "a home"). Included were some interesting covers related to royal visits and various anniversaries.

I've decided to start collecting some of these things and I'll post some scans as I sort through them, for anyone who's interested. I'd also like to see anything others have along the same lines.

Dave.

A couple things to start, from the tour of the USA in 1939 - sent from "The Royal Train RPO".

re: A New Obsession (Like I Need One!!!) - The (British) Royal Family...

My wife and I, also, have just finished watching the Crown series. It was fascinating seeing mention of their visits to various British colonies mentioned in the show and finding several stamp issues related to the visits with spaces (and, occasionally, stamps Happy ) in the Scott International albums to which I have been moving my collection.

It was, also, fascinating getting a look at some of the political issues that occurred during Elizabeth's first 10 years as Queen. The stories about her interactions with Jackie Kennedy, the Egyptian takeover of the Suez Canal, etc. found me looking for stamps that were related to the events as well.

It is interesting that the modern anti-royal cynicism fails to recognise that recent generations of the Royal Family ( even the much-maligned Prince Charles over the Diana business ) are all paragons of virtue compared with some of their predecessors ( one of whom was so bad we chopped off his head ! ).

Those who would like to see Charles passed over have not listened to his eldest son who patently doesn't want the job anytime soon, although he will be lumbered with it eventually. It is also evident that no.2 son has waited until he has reached the "unlikely to be King" stage before getting engaged. There have been one or two candidates in the past, and the relationships fizzled out, presumably because the candidates haven't fancied the "job" that goes with being married to Royalty.

Malcolm,

Though a Yank, I have always admired the Royal Family (except for that dust-up a number of years ago.) The longevity of the line makes me think that Prince William is thinking it is a retirement job. Happy

Also, I will add "lumbered" to my vocabulary in context used - wonderful!
