Update:
We went to the Kentucky State Lego Robotics tournament this past weekend. When we started this robotics team our kids were in Benton Elementary School so our team is listed as being from Benton, KY. Benton Elementary is one of two schools that feeds South Marshall Middle School. Two other elementary schools feed North Marshall, and they all end up at Marshall County High. Nobody outside of this immediate area would know that Benton IS Marshall County, essentially. So during the parade of teams we were met with the same courteous applause as the other 47 teams. Since we were always announced as being from Benton during the competition, we received the same equal treatment. Even at the closing ceremonies, when each team was presented with ribbons for making it to the State Finals, it was the same thing. Even though the tournament organizers were aware of who we were, they were very low key if anyone else was around. That was very kind of them as it let our kids focus on their competition.
After the ribbons were presented, it was time for the trophies. There were 1st and 2nd place trophies in about 10 categories and then the Overall trophies. But before the trophy presentations they announced that a middle school team from Marshall County had made it despite what happened the prior week and gave our team name: The Roblox Rebels. The entire place erupted. Then they started handing out team trophies and toward the end they got to the category of Strategy and Innovation. They announced the 2nd Place winner as: Roblox Rebels. This time, instead of the courteous applause we normally received, the kids got a standing ovation. It was very emotional.
Marshall County is a basketball powerhouse in this state. Many state championships. Lots of rivalries. And yet, most of the other schools at that tournament had sent something for us to take back to MCHS. Our girls basketball team was not going to qualify for the state tournament because they wouldn't have enough regular season games due to the shooting, so a rival team invited them to an extra game at their place, all expenses paid. Our colors are orange and blue. Almost every basketball team in the region has orange and blue shoelaces right now. The amount of stuff pouring in from well-wishers is extraordinary!
It restores my faith in humanity with all this response, and if I may, one more comment:
We ARE Marshall!!!

Lars,
thanks so much for sharing the story. I teared up.
Knowing the guy who wrote it, for the rest of you, I can say Lars holds all to high standards, not least himself. So, if he says something about someone, good or bad, they've earned it.
Proud of you for telling the story in precisely the way it unfolded; it wasn't about them, but about the people around them.

This is what Washington County did for our girls' basketball team yesterday:
http://www.wpsdlocal6.com/2018/02/06/washington-county-high-school-raises-thousands-marshall-county/
What's missing from the video is that this was an unscheduled game that Washington County arranged so our girls would have enough regular season games to qualify for the playoffs. They are 4 hours away from us. The girls went up Sunday night and were given free room and board and the opportunity to play JV and Varsity games on Monday. They had no idea all of the rest would happen.
By the way, the photojournalist, Chad Darnall, that shot this story was dropping his daughter off at the high school when the shooting happened and he was able to get early reports out to the local TV station in Paducah, where he works. (I also commute to Paducah daily). His son goes to Marshall County Middle School and, you guessed it, is a member of my Roblox Rebels and was at the State Robotics competition with me last weekend.

It's been 4 days, and as a resident of Marshall County with two children in the Marshall County School system and two nephews actually there at the High School, I must say:
1. I personally know more than one adult that ran toward danger instead of away from it
2. An off-duty sheriff's deputy probably prevented the shooter from reloading because of his heroic actions.
3. Even though everyone in Marshall County knows who the shooter was, his name is still not released to the press. That's the way it should be. His name should be a footnote, not a headline, to this story!
We ARE
Marshall Strong!
This will not define us, and I have the honor of mentoring a Lego Robotics team from Marshall County that will compete in the State Championships next weekend. Underestimate MY team at your peril!
