Great job! I have collected my whole life and never have sold a stamp! However, I will need to go do that route at some point.
Hi Geoff;
Under the user name of kentallpines, I had my first sale on eBay in 2007. I listed 17
lots of stamps, and only one sold, to a collector in Finland. I was more than thrilled at
selling to someone so far from the states.
However he was not a stamp collector at all, as he only collected things related to
tobacco or pipes and other such items. The lot he purchased was a set of eight stamps
from Nicaragua, about the Sandinista, land reform acts. One of the eight stamps depicted
a tobacco plantation. I had apparently used the word tobacco in my description,
and he used that key to search titles and descriptions!
A few months later also on eBay I sold a set of eight stamps from Austria, to a Opera fan
in Belgium. The stamps were issued to honor the centenary of the opera house in Vienna.
Each of the eight stamps depicted a scene from a different opera. One of those scenes
was an opera, (Don Carlos) that was composed by Guiseppi Verdi.
After the sale we had many chats via e-mail about classical music. He asked if I liked
opera and who did I most enjoy listening to. I told him my favorite was Luciano
Pavarotti, and my favorite performance by him was rigoletto. He asked me if I knew that
the opera rigoletto, was composed by Guiseppi Verdi!
What a wonderful coincidence that we both were fans of Verdi!!
I have since those wonderful days sold many hundreds of items. I listed stamps, coins,
banknotes, jewellery, including some made by me, and found pieces of jewellery. I also
listed other Collectables too.
Some of my memorable sales were:
about 4 lots on Etsy.com
6-8 coin & stamp items on eCrater.com
12-15 stamp lots on Wensy.com (gone now)
3 dozen or so items on eBay mostly jewellery
2 dozen lots of stamps on Delcampe.com
around 40-50 coin & stamp items on eBid.net
over 50 lots of coins and stamps on WebStore.com
and of course around 1,000 lots of stamps on SOR
It has been a fun ride and I would never have met so many interesting people if not for
all those sales, and that includes all my sales on here too. You should all add this fun
activity to your bucket list. Don't expect to make any money at it. Just do it for the joy of
making new friends. I consider all of these buyers my friends and hear from several of
them via e-mails.
Still just sortin'....

Reading your post and then thinking about selling stamp son Ebay. I may sell again on Ebay
but I don't know. It use to be such a great place but has steadily gone down hill several years. I also remembered I had a copy of my first sale on Ebay in my stock book So I figured I'd post it.
Mitch,
Of course you sell a lot on Stamps-2-Go (I know because I buy from you regularly!). I assume that is your preferred place/way to sell off duplicates? Do you sell any other ways or places?
Chris
Not having many single stamps of value to sell, I am at a loss on how to sell. Since I primarily collect used, I have assembled are large stock book of unused, esp. GB, Germany, and Australia. Most are valued less than $5 even as a set. Selling on SOR is an option, but I travel frequently for work which means it could be a couple of weeks before I could get back online to deal with a sale. That's unfair to the buyer and probably not within the rules.
I used APS for the one stamp I sold since they dealt with it - a huge convenience, but the selling price was over $100. This might be the best route since I don't yet want to manage it myself. Has anyone on this list sold lower cost items on the APS Stamp Store? Experiences?
I guess now I have to feed the dragon!
Geoff
Hi Mitch;
Thank you for sharing that Mitch. I think all of us will agree, that our first sale is
always memorable and special. Mine being in Finland and to a person who didn't collect
stamps was especially so.
I think this thread would be a good place for others to share with the club, their first
sale. Please include any interesting details and the back story of any relationship that
may have developed with the buyer.
I've sold in over 25 nations from Norway to New Zealand, and loved every minute of it.
Another interesting anecdote on this topic was an Australian who bought Tanganyika #8-9
MNH which he purchased three sets of! It turns out that we were both on Navy ships whose
primary purpose was spying, and recording radio transmissions. I shared with him photos
of the two ships I was on, one a destroyer tender, and the other was the spy ship.
The Navy inteligence in Australia, deleted the photos from my e-mail, even tho both have
since been sold for scrap!!
I'll be returning to sales again, after I sort out 100,000+ stamps. I'm way behind on
that project, as other distractions have got in the way. So to my past buyer friends, I
will return as soon as I can and you will be the first to know.
Still just sortin'

Chris, Yes, Stamps2go is the only place I am selling these days. I thin it is the easiest place for both sellers and buyers to use. Everything is listed by Scott. Simply enter the Scott number and they either have it or not. The shipping cost are always the same so there is no guess work when ordering. I might have to list on Ebay in the future but for now I think S2go is the best of all options.
I see you just placed a new order for a bunch of Peru stamps. I have a couple more orders to fill but should be able to get yours pulled and out the door tomorrow. We've been having ice storm all this past week and since my mailbox is nearly a 1/4 mile away down the driveway, so getting to it is iffy.
Thanks Mitch,
Yes, I agree with you about S2G, but the shipping costs can add up if you are buying from a lot of different sellers (of course that's no different than eBay, right?) And there are some people who have a high minimum price, which I don't like. If I find something I like, I usually see what else that same seller has listed so I keep the shipping cost to a minimum.
And, I just recently realized there are sets listed (different tab at the top), had always just thought there were only singles listed
Yes, just orders some Peru stamps from you, thanks! I like buying from you because your prices are reasonable, I know you, and your stamps are always in nice condition, and you are fast.
Interesting. The stamp I sold has shown up on eBay as part of an "Estate Sale"
https://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-GENUINE-SCOTT-O68-VF-USED-1873-STATE-DEPT-OFFICIAL-2015-APS-CERT-SCV-3000/142688208085?_trkparms=%26rpp_cid%3D5a8440babb33ed0845b2b168%26rpp_icid%3D5a84bd049c0aa00840ee75a9
Needless to say the lot description is misleading, and barely a mention of the sewing machine reperf on the left. I'll be curious if he gets his reserve.
No wonder I am skeptical of eBay!
Geoff
Years of collecting and never put a stamp up for sale - I put one in the APS stamp store and sold it! I've become a stamp tycoon! Now, to find another one...
