Four margins - Great
Crease - Bad
A crease is a major flaw, would disqualify this stamp for me.
Don
Thank you Don. My biggest concern as well. If not for the crease, I would have just made the purchase, and been happy with it.
However, with the crease I am resisting my urge to acquire.
If anyone here does have a good price to offer on a penny black, I'd be happy to consider it. Please message me with details if you do.
The cancel is not in the best shape either.
Thank you Smauggie,
Yes; rather unattractive, isn't it?
One of our SOR members will be offering me a choice of some penny blacks in the next few days, so I've left this one on hold. If someone else buys it, I will shed no tears due to the nasty crease and smudgie cancel, even though the price fits nicely within my budget.

I believe if this stamp is from plate 1b it should have a constant flaw on the P of PENNY but this is not present.
Nice four margin stamp but I think $160 should get you a little better eye appea
I will have some very fine 1d Blacks available correctly plated let me know

I agree that $161 is steep for the one you've been discussing.
But if you can find even a crummy G-B at a fair price, it might be worth it. You'd have a G-B from G.B.!
For $15, I bought this really raggedy Penny Black because it had my initials.
My criterion for stamp purchases is simplicity itself: if I like it, I buy it (assuming I can afford it). I would not buy that Penny Black.
Recently, I've been buying some expensive stamps and covers that I never would have considered in my impecunious past. It's been possible because I've mostly stopped buying inexpensive stamps in order to save enough for the expensive ones.
Check out eBay and Delcampe. Each of those has some much better looking Penny Blacks for less money.

"Impecunious", what a wonderful word!
Thanks for all your comments and advice.
I didn't buy the black mentioned in my first post on this thread, and never found another, as life got in the way again.
Off travelling next week, for an extended time, and won't be able to play the philately game til I return. THEN, I'll get me one of them penny blacks!
I'd buy it if the price was right. Just a great historical artifact...
I'm selling this Penny Black for AU$60.00
Plate number - 9
Rob
That's one heck of an MF'er!
Sold the Penny Black.

I have been thinking seriously about buying a penny black, but my budget is not quite up to the prices I have been seeing.
Today I came accross this one for Cdn$161.00
Can anyone offer advice as to whether this is a good buy?
Small Crown Wmk, Plate 1b
Thanks for your help!!
