I was absent traveling through one of the most extreme area on earth. The ATACAMA desert of Argentina and Chile.
here are some photos for those who have expressed an interest.
the intrepid travelers.
the road climbing to 14,800ft. Base camp above 7,200ft
Landscape showing a few oasis like areas
Rock colors!
More colors and a small tourist stopover
High desert with Cardon cacti
Dry salt lakes everywhere, some huge areas!
100 ton antenna being moved to the ALMA site
Atacama Large Millimeter Array = ALMA
Stock photo. Access to the 15400 elevation site is restricted. We visited the operational base which is at 7800 ft. Techies..you would love it!
the Chuquicamata open pit copper mine near Calama
1.2 km deep,
4km diameter closing in 2020
350 Tons of low grade (1%) ore per truck
7 days 24 hours operation (one hour per trip RT)
Tailings from the mine swallow the now ghost town of 25000 people.
Chuquicamata was evacuated in 2006 due to environmental issues.
The night sky. Night temperature...freezing cold.
I think this gives you a general idea!
This is the driest highest desert area on earth! And yet it has been inhabited for the last 8000 years! I will spare you the archeological pictures!

Ralph -- Thanks very much for sharing those pictures! Amazing!
I'm struck by how much some of those shots resemble areas in the US Southwest, including the desert areas of Southern California, parts of Nevada, and particularly Utah (which seems like nature's geological laboratory!).
On the other hand, that night sky shot is incomparable!
