Hi all,

Just had to share the first FDC of my (soon to be) "Atomic" topical collection of mostly covers, with some individual stamps sprinkled in for good measure.

I just think this cover has all the elements of coolness!

* Attractive stamp design
* Meaningful cache "message"
* Interesting cache
* Old enough to be interesting

Just had to share this with you all, because it is just a really nice one.

If you don't agree, that is okay too! Winking

--- Pardon my scan, it is a bit too light ---

In the nicest possible way, may I suggest that you may have stumbled upon your atomic topical niche: Atomic Over-Promises.

Cheers,

LOL!

Yeah, I'm sure after WW2, everyone wanted to put the war time use of Atomic Energy behind them...

Now everyone just wanted to emphasize the "good" I guess.

Interesting...

You can see the emphasis on the "good" uses in a lot of countries and their stamps during this time.

re: It's absolutely ATOMIC!!!

""Atoms for Peace" was the title of a speech delivered by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower to the UN General Assembly in New York City on December 8, 1953...The speech was part of a carefully orchestrated media campaign, called "Operation Candor", to enlighten the American public on the risks and hopes of a nuclear future. It was a propaganda component of the Cold War strategy of containment. Eisenhower's speech opened a media campaign that would last for years and that aimed at "emotion management," balancing fears of continuing nuclear armament with promises of peaceful use of uranium in future nuclear reactors. The speech was a tipping point for international focus on peaceful uses of atomic energy, even during the early stages of the Cold War. Eisenhower, with some influence from J. Robert Oppenheimer, may have been attempting to convey a spirit of comfort to a terrified world after the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and of the nuclear tests of the early 1950s."

Richard Rhodes wrote a wonderful book on the discovery and development of atomic energy: The Making of the Atomic Bomb (1986). This was followed by Dark Sun, the making of the hydrogen bomb (1996). And, he has a brand new book out now: Energy, a human history.

I have read the first two, can't wait to get my hands on the new one!
