Hi all,

I have purchased stamps and covers from:

* StampoRama's Auctions/Approvals
* Mystic
* Ebay
* BuckaCover

Could you give me a name of some other places that you like to purchase from?

If I can't find it on the sites above, I don't currently know a "good" place to buy from.

Thank you,

JR

re: Buying stamps/covers - Need some other "shop" names

Have you tried Delcampe? Although it is a European website there are plenty of US dealers and collectors there offering all types of stamps and covers. I have found it to be reliable and for that reason tend to avoid Ebay, which I never quite trust. Mind you, I think these large companies are only as good as the individuals who sell on them - I have only had trouble with a couple of sellers on Delcampe (there is a function whereby you can 'hide' them so that you do not have to deal with them again).

Then there are the many dealers who specialise in one area - two of my favourites are Igor Sandler of North Carolina (turnaround time: less than three weeks) and closer to home David Kerr of Scotland (often only two or three days), from both of whom I buy Soviet Union stamps.

Since no one has brought it up yet, I think HipStamps can be a good source as well, especially for individual stamps and covers. (Collections, perhaps less so, but there are listings for those as well.) It is based in the US, and the majority of the sellers are US-based as well, but the listings are world-wide.

Just like eBay, you do need to check the individual seller's shipping costs, but there's a tab to do that within the listing. (Watch out for some sellers who have both a flat shipping fee and a per-item fee as well. That can add up quickly.)

It's nice because you can easily search by Scott number or Scott number range on there within a particular country.

Full disclosure: as you can see from the bottom of this post, I am a casual seller on there (selling off as I downsize my collecting areas -- I really need to get back to listing on there!). And you'll see that there are other participants on this board who are as well. The fees for selling there are less than for eBay, and allow sellers to build up quite a range of inventory. (A basic store there for $5/mo allows a seller to list up to 10,000 items, plus the 8% final value fee.)

Hi Johnny,

Don't forget our auctions and approvals for sale here at StampoRama.

For the most part my best purchases have been in-person purchases. Have you considered attending a stamp show or a stamp club meeting? Many stamp clubs have auctions where members sell items at auction to those present.

Stamps2Go.com can be an excellent source for individual items as well as hipstamp.com. Between the two of them there is probably more access to individual higher end stamps than any other source. Roy's Discount Stamp Shop for which the added appears in the upper right hand who advertisement appears on the top right corner of the Stamporam web site pages has, also, proved useful to me.
