Are any of the postal cancels from ~1900–1940 collectable or rare? If so, do you happen to know of a resource (similar to the Scott catalog) to help determine value and type?

Thanks in advance!

re: 1900-1940 postal cancels

There are all kinds of collectible cancels from the 1900's. There are machine cancels, slogan cancels, Doane cancels, pictorial cancels, 4 bar cancels, DPO cancels, RPO cancels, APO cancels, censored cancels, and the list goes on and on and on. People also collect by hometown, by birth date, calendar cancels, 4th of July cancels, Christmas cancels, N4w Years cancels, RFD cancels, Territorial cancels (pre statehood Alaska and Hawaii) and etc.

While catalogs and checklists exist for most categories there is no master catalog - you need to pick your interests and uee google or to narrow down your request for information.

re: 1900-1940 postal cancels

Hi Ben,

In the time period you specify there are a dizzying variety of cancel devices/types that were used.

Some of the more popular are machine cancels and Doane cancels.

For Doane cancels, you are in luck as an acquaintance of mine has made an excellent website concerning these cancels: www.doanecancel.com

For machine cancels, most of the rare ones were used prior to your time frame though there are still some scarce 20th century machine cancels. There are catalogs issued for machine cancels and they are organized by the company that made them. They can be acquired through the International Machine Cancel Society.

Hopefully that gives you a bit of a start.

Of course you are welcome to post scans of items you have questions about here in Stamporama.
