I am using a set of old Gibbons Commonwealth albums to 1952 and want to create checklists to use for this collection by removing pages from old Scott catalogs. I hve bought nice Scott 1966 catalog which ought to be what I'd need.

Anyone else done anything similar? I will be stripping pages from a bound volume. Depending on how it goes I may then copy them onto printing paper and place in binders, or use the original pages.

Ideas welcome.

re: Creating a Checklist from Old Catalog

I have some similar processes. For my collection I use four sources- a Scott's Classic; Scott full set for post classic period; a Yvert Tome 2 for French colonial Africa; and ***copies of COB (Belgian catalog) for Belgian Africa. I circle stamps I have in my collection in all 4 sources. Only the last is completely matched to the method you have presented.

re: Creating a Checklist from Old Catalog

I have purchased pages stripped from catalogues and put them in protective sleeves but as a reference not a checklist. I did extract the a values pages (the section of price by grade) from my Scott specialized and then scanned them into a PDF and OCR'ed it. This way it was portable and I could search it.

I did purchased a used catalogue once and noticed the owner has used colored markers for various issues. I was guessing one was for Mint and another used.

So has anyone stripped catalog pages from a bound volume and if so what tools did you use? I've used a box cutter on similar projects and that does not cut cleanly. I wonder if n Xacto knife would be best to use. Maybe I can get advice at a craft store.

re: Creating a Checklist from Old Catalog

I use a 1958 Scott US specialized fully intact as my checklist,I don't need any post 1926 postage stamps and the catalogue covers all the revenues and any other BOB that I need. The older Scott catalogues are 6"1/4 x 9" 1/8" and 7/8" thick, cheap to buy and hard cover so they are easy to carry.

In my case I just pulled them out but it was not a clean edge. I suspect a box cutter etc. is needed or find a way to soften the spine. High heat may loosen the glue.

re: Creating a Checklist from Old Catalog

I keep a thin binder nearby that contains the Revenues section and the US Possessions section from an old US Specialized that I removed the pages from using an Exacto knife, then hole-punching them and viola!
An easy to handle mini-catalog of the info I use most.

Much easier than that heavy, floppy book.

I probably wouldn't have done it if it weren't for the fact that a dog I was watching for a friend chewed on the catalog, so rather than throw it out, I made use of it as mentioned.

If there is a print shop in your area they should have the capability to cleanly cut the spine off of the catalog.

re: Creating a Checklist from Old Catalog

If you have a lot of time and a program like Excel, you can copy the information to the spreadsheet and then periodically go to the Library and update the Scott values. This can also work as a checklist by allocating a column to indicate items that are needed.

It takes some time to setup initially, but is quite simple once it is finished.

re: Creating a Checklist from Old Catalog

The catalog I intend to use in this project arrived today.

I think I want to leave the British pages bound in the original binding. There are a couple hundred pages for Latin america bound after the British in the back of the volume. I can either leave them in and ignore them or, cut them out (to lighten up the book and make it easier to carry to shows, etc).

Would anyone know if cutting out the pages I don't need weaken what is left?
