Hi to all,

Having a spare time out.

but this stamp has been puzzling me for a while.

I have held it up to the light, I have used lighter fluid, I have used UV lights.

I can not find a watermark.

Now this stamp is notorious for having watermarks all over the place, and it is hard to find a good centred one.

I am nearly convinced it does not have one. Any suggestions.

Unfortunately, it also has damage, there is a tear in the top right hand corner, and the postmark is ugly.

Regards

Horamakhet

Hi Horamakhet

I looked in the ACSC and cannot find any mention that the 1½ stamp of any shade of brown being printed without a watermark.

Try facing it to the ceiling and shine a torch on the reverse to find the watermark (but not too close), I do that with not-so-easy detectable watermarks.

Unless, of course, you have a new discovery (and that would be very exciting!), there must be a watermark. Do you use a watermark detector or fluid?

edit: yes you use fluid, I re-read your post

Hi Rob & Dave,

Now here's where it gets interesting.

Tried your suggestion Rob, no results.

Now there is actually one copy of the Penny & half brown, with no watermark. It has been missing for 52 years. It turned up recently (See attached article)

It has just recently been authenticated by The Royal Philatelic Society of Victoria.
Like my copy it is also on thin paper, but unlike mine, it is not damaged. It has just been given the BW number 83aa.
It is postmarked Barnaw, which could be Barnawatha in victoria.

This one is postmarked Magill, which I think is SA.

Yes this is also from the collection that I purchased.

Is this another copy, do I send it to the Royal Philatelic Society?

Could be a repeat of the KGV 1d red sideways discoveries. (only two known to exist)

Nice. If you're sure there's no watermark, send it in for a cert.

Hi Dave

I will keep retesting until I am completely sure that it does not have one.

You never know what turns up

The cert mentions thin paper....is there a discernible difference in the paper of another example?

Hi to all

One test I have forgotten, I will put it under a stereo microscope and light it from the back and front, and if there is a watermark, it will possibly show up.

Until I am absolutely sure, I can't find one, then I will submit it to the Royal Victorian Philatelic Society.

As I have said before, who knows what is lurking out there to be discovered.

KGV stamps are the most studied stamps in philately.

Hi Horamakhet

I would not recommend sending the stamp to the Royal Philatelic Society of Victoria as I have heard through many reliable sources that they are not always accurate. I would send it to Michael Drury, he will be the best bet as he is Australia's most expert with KGV stamps and also Scott Starling.

Hi Rob

You are correct,

I have dealt with Michael previously, and will definitely send it to him.

He is away at the moment, I think

He is very accurate, he normally shows them to Scott as well.

Will let you know when I send it, and result.

Hi to all

Well, I have now examined the stamp under a stereo microscope, and still the watermark eludes me.

I have tried all possible tests that I can think of.

Anyone have any ideas

I think my next step is to send it to the experts, Michael Drury et al.

Can you post a high-contrast, hi-res scan of the back of the stamp?
