General Philatelic/Identify This? : Several Asian Stamps for Identification of Country and Time Period of Issue

Here are several stamps that I am having difficulty identifying as to the issuing country/agency and time period:

Image Not Found

The first two stamps look familiar in that I am sure I have seen them before but I am having trouble identifying these now. All were in incorrect places in the China section of an International Junior album but I don't think they are from China. The bottom two stamps may be Japanese but are unusual in that normally Japanese stamps have roman numerals for denominations.

re: Several Asian Stamps for Identification of Country and Time Period of Issue

The two left-most on the top row are from the Japanese Occupation period of the Philippines, and are Scott-listed.

The one on the right I can't quite pin down for you except that I think it's China before the Revolution. It looks like it's a fund-raising stamp, rather than a postal issue, but I can't say that for a fact.

The two on the bottom are Japanese revenues. I think I'm in error on that.

I can say they are not Japanese postage stamps. I can't quite read the writing on them well enough to say that they're Japanese or not. (Possibly Japanese occupation revenue stamps? or perhaps Chinese or something else altogether?)

You're correct that most Japanese postage stamps do have something on them to identify them as from Japan to Westerners, but there are some that defy that practice.

If someone doesn't identify the two on the bottom correctly (and I bet someone will!), if you post a larger scan just of those two, we can take another crack at it.

Here is a bit higher resolution scan for the two bottom stamps. Found the first two from the top in the International album with the help provided. Thanks!

I am not a worldwide collector and I do not have a set of Scott catalogues, so I likely should not even risk offering an opinion. However, I seem to recall the four corner six-arm symbol within the circle to be characteristic of Manchukuo. You might look there to see if you find your two stamps. Otherwise, wait for someone who knows what they are talking about!

Thanks for the additional pic, JBaxter!

I took the liberty of orienting it rightside-up and cropping and brightening it a tiny little bit.

Interesting, the symbols in the corners do look like the orchid crest of Manchukuo but I am not finding any listed stamps without roman numerals of the appropriate colors in the Scott Classic 1840-1940 catalog and nothing in my Scott 1971 catalog either. Sad

Cathotel: you may be right. That symbol looks like it could be a forerunner of the "logo" Manchukuo used later on.

Also, it looks like the 3 right-most characters in the curved area near the top of the stamp may be the characters for Manchukuo. (They would read from right to left.)

It's in a stylized format that I have to work at to read, but I think those are the characters.

There's an excellent online resource here:

http://manchukuostamps.com/index.htm

Here's the revenue section:

http://manchukuostamps.com/revenue.htm

I couldn't find the stamps quickly looking through the different sections, but that doesn't mean they're not there.

JBaxter, either in the revenue section or through a link on the home page, you (or someone else here!) may be able to locate it!

I've also sent an email to someone who's something of an expert.

JBaxter: I'm pretty confident (virtually positive) that it's not a regular Manchukuo postal issue, so it won't show up in Scott.

I'm hearing that those are China, Ching (Qing) dynasty, so up until 1912, but haven't heard that authoritatively yet.

Chinese Famine Relief (Researchgate):

"When famine overwhelmed five North China provinces in 1920, one of the ways that funds were raised to combat the disaster was through the sale of "cinderella" stamps, stamps that could not be used as legal postage but rather could be pasted onto envelopes or packages as decorations. There were two such efforts during the 1920s and both mainly sold their stamps in the United States. The first fundraising drive was organized by the American Committee for the China Famine Relief Fund which sold a 3-cent stamp, the announced cost of feeding one Chinese person for one day. This effort raised nearly 4.4 million and ceased operations in early June 1921 after only about three months of activity. The second campaign, organized by the China International Famine Relief Commission (CIFRC), was considerably less successful in raising money. It issued a wider variety of stamps, probably between 1923 and 1929 and in 1924, the CIFRC even established a special department to coordinate the sale of stamps in China and the United States, mostly during the Christmas and New Year's season. Sales were uneven and always low; even in years where there were profits, they were trivial. The sale of these stamps ceased at the end of the decade."

The bottom two appear to be tax revenues.

There is an excellent free pdf on the identifying Japanese revenues here:

that I reccomend downloading for reference.

re: Several Asian Stamps for Identification of Country and Time Period of Issue

Found another reference on Chinese Revenue Stamps online which showed a stamp that matched one of the two bottom stamps and said it was a revenue stamp for 1907 prepared for use in trade with Japan (?). The issues are apparently only known unused per the reference. Amounts are in Chinese characters only so not interpretable by me. Sad

Thanks all for the help in pointing me towards a definitive answer.

I haven't found a definitive answer on the stamp marked Chinese Famine Relief but Michael has pointed me in the correct direction but so far I haven't found an online reference for the mentioned issues.
