Hi,

I am looking for information on the quantities of USA proofs that were produced.
Many have said that the quantities were quite low, but no documentation to back up the claims.
No catalogs reveal the quntities. Anyone have any reference to these numbers?

Thanks
Marios

re: USA Proof Quantities ISsued

Hi Marios, I would also like to know more about proofs. They are listed in Scott Specialized USA catalog, the information there is rather official and doesn't answer the looming questions.

I get that "proofs" in any business are advance copies for approval prior to printing the regular run. Scott mentions that proofs exist for all USA stamps, but they only list those outside of government ownership.

So my questions are how these proofs got out of the USPOD and into the hands of collectors. Also, I would anticipate that proofs would be in a limited quantity, enough to distribute to the decision makers for approval. Many of the 19th century proofs seem to be rather abundant. I bought one for something like $30. In fact, proofs of high value Columbians are for sale cheaper than actual stamps!

How were these printed and distributed? Were quantities printed for philatelic favor? And were they distributed by USPOD to all takers, or was there a sweetheart deal with a preferred stamp dealer or two?

There seems to be an interesting story here...

A nice article on the Roosevelt Proofs albums (BIG bucks) By Richard Segal. Note; the article takes a minute or two to load because I allowed Richard to code this himself. Rather than using thumbnails with links to higher resolution images, he embedded the high resolution images directly into the article.

The Roosevelt Proofs albums were very low quantity but were only one type of proofs being produced. I do not recall ever seeing any compiled proof quantities lists.

You should check with James Lee. He deals mainly in Proofs & Essays. He should know if there is a list of quantities produced.
