Greetings,
I cannot claim any expertise on the topic of Canadian cheques with stamps, but my observation is that they are common with the definitive postal issues of their era (low denominations) and with the excise revenue stamps (likewise low value denominations), though not widely included in collectors' collections. Stated differently, in my very limited experience, a few have them and tend to have them by the pile, often with limited success in finding others wanting to share the bounty, while many others (I include myself) have picked up a few and they sit idly on the bottom of a drawer in the stamp space. The cheques with a pre-printed embossed excise tax "stamp" vary from one common design to a couple that are quite challenging to find (and are listed with much higher value).
Hopefully another member will be able to shed more light on the topic. I am certain that, just like certain cancels on the embossed issues, there must be certain issuing banks or stamps or cancels that are rare and highly sought by those who do collect such cheques, and such a collector can inform you of such details.
By the way, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed a visit on the Sunshine Coast a few months ago but did not get as far north as your location. I feel confident the beauty of the area will never become merely commonplace to you. Congratulations on settling in such a locale.
Tom
Hi cathotel,
Thank you for your message and information. I will be getting the cheques very soon and will post a few for members to see, and in the meantime I will keep looking for further information.
Thank you for your kind remarks about the Sunshine Coast, it is indeed a wonderfully beautiful place with plenty of land and the Pacific Ocean (Salish Sea) on our doorstep.
Cheers,
John
Hi cathotel,
I see that you live in Kelowna in the Glenmore area. back in the 60s and 70s, we lived in Glenmore area on Greene Street, (now called Garland Street), up against Knox Mountain, back then Kelowna was a small town on about 16,000 when we moved there.
You also live a great area.
Cheers,
John
In the early 70s, my buddie and I used to trudge up Knox Mtn. every night to find a place to sleep, after closing the Royal Anne. Great fun, but I wouldn't do it now. Anyhow, the Royal Anne has been gone for years. Can't remember the name of the other bar we used to go to.
Hi Benque,
There was the Royal Anne, a not too bad hotel, then there was the Willow Inn, had a reputation for the bikers.
Also the Capri Hotel and the Caravel.
Unfortunately everything has changed so much in the past 50 years in Kelowna, but I'm not sure if that really is progress.
Cheers
Hi Folks,
Anybody out there collect old cheques (Checks) with stamps on them? The stamps may be registration stamps or revenue stamps.
I have been offered a large collection of Canadian cheques from the 1940s, all with stamps on them.
Any info I can get would be most appreciated.
Cheers,
Johnny
