My wife's mother, Joyce, passed away recently at the age of 91, and she was kind enough to remember I collect stamps. Joyce's mother Diana was the primary collector, with Joyce collecting in her youth. The collection includes two 1940 Scott Modern Postage Stamp Albums, a 1938 Scott's International Postage Stamp Album "Junior Edition", several books on stamps, the 1951 Scott Catalogue (2 volumes), a diary Diana kept as a leader of the P.S. 188 stamp club (1951), and large collection of covers, etcetera.

Mainly low level, grubby stamps, but a nice sentimental gift that I am enjoying cleaning up, soaking, and putting stamps in a cleaner environment. Makes one ponder upon the strange path stamps take during their life.

The mounting of some of the stamps is barbaric, peculiar, and odd. The philately of teen-aged girls is not for the faint of heart. Despite that, a wonderful stamp experience.

re: Inherited Stamp Collection

Unfortunately looks like 99% of the collections I have been given from relatives, or looked at to buy on Kijiji, which were described as “my grandmas collection and so very valuable”. (And interestingly, many had at least one “Modern” album)!

On average, Such offerings had a selling price over $800 and the most I could offer was less than $50.

Very sad actually. Especially when sentiment grossly exceeds reality.

re: Inherited Stamp Collection

I'd keep the albums as-is and intact! They are relics of the past, showing how collectors did it in the olden days. And a nice keepsake of your wife's mother!

As you said the stamps are pretty much common and may be damaged from that handling as well. So I don't believe it is worth the effort to harvest them from the albums either.
