First rule: Don't listen to other people telling you how or what you should collect. It is your hobby. You do with it as you will.
Second rule: Hobbies are for relaxation and enjoyment, not for scrutiny by others.
If I go by what that person told you, then my collection is way too big. Maybe to that person, but not to me!

Great advice from Michael. This is YOUR hobby, your FUN time. Collect however and whatever makes YOU happy.
One point that I would add is that no matter what we decide collect we should all be good care takers of our philatelic treasures and protect them from damage.

My wife has a friend who cannot understand collecting at all. She has been to our house and upon viewing my hobby room, declared it was all just clutter. She hates clutter. If you go to her house, there is nothing there at all! She and her husband have no interests, I don't know what they do in their spare time! So I'm not even entertaining her opinion!

It sounds like your friends are 'minimalists';
we have friends that are the same way, and they specifically refer to themselves as such. They have a gorgeous home - with nearly nothing in it. They have pillows for the couch, but they don't even keep THEM out; they are stored in a fashionable wooden box/bench in one side of the living room and removed as needed then immediately placed back in storage when leaving the room!
And that's the way they like it!
No family pictures (yes, they have children), no other decorative pictures, no nic-nacs,
no nothing. To me, the house doesn't even look 'lived-in' most of the time.
I don't feel comfortable there other than for short visits. I prefer a home that LOOKS and FEELS lived in!
But to each his/her own! It works for them and that is OK.

I know where you're coming from. I have several friends who collect nothing and don't understand me at all. I grew up with nothing since there was very little money to spend. The few things I did have were greatly appreciated and held onto! I really enjoy my many collections and enjoy being around my "stuff" - most of my friends are totally baffled but since I'm happy I really don't care what others think! I do feel really sorry for my executors when the journey ends!

I am quite the opposite. I am a collector ! I recently moved from a 4 bedroom house to a 1 bedroom apartment. A friend said it looks like I am living in a store. Besides stamps I collect coins, baseball cards, beer steins, vinyl albums and 45's, harbor lights miniature lighthouses, hand sculptured wizard candles, various "clown" figurines, etc... I really needed to downsize when I moved but I just could not part with anything. Meanwhile I have been living here for over 4 months and I still have not bought a new sofa - I have any empty wall ! Steve

When we moved last month it was to a house in a retirement community - that had a basement that could hold all I collect (Books) and sell (vinyl,books, postcards and stamps). The basement is the size of the upstairs (1350 sq ft). I don't want to even think about how I would dispose of all this should we one day have to move to an apartment.

A basement in a retirement community? I usually think of retirement communities being mostly single level or at least with elevators.

Yes indeed! We needed either a basement or a two car garage that I could use half or more for inventory storage along with a loft. We have about 2600sq ft. There are bigger ones in other communities, one in fact with three stories with an elevator but for considerably more money. This fit our needs perfectly.

Greg, you are an hour west of me now! I was curious about the basement too. We need to go the other direction though, back to or at least towards New Jersey to be nearer my daughters and grandchildren. All the retirement communities there are on slabs. Some of the homes are spectacular, but no basements!
And when we move, like you, I insist on having room for my interests. Heck, what else am I supposed to do in my retirement!
Harvey, I believe part of why I'm a collector is the same reason you mention. When I was a kid my father was US Army and we lived in places like 1960s Izmir, Turkey where there was no way to buy toys and such. I learned to value and take care of what I owned! I also believe that since we moved every few years, my possessions were the only consistency that I could control, so they became very important to me. As such, I still have a lot of my things from my youth, including every record album I ever bought!

Tom our daughters are no where near us. One is outside of Atlanta (and PA is as far south as I would ever live) and the other is in Oregon. We looked at about 8 communities, almost all in PA and Cornwall is the best bang for the buck. We got this at a GREAT price because it was a tough sell due to the size (too big) and age (built in the mid 90's). Nothing wrong with it. They redid the kitchen, new paint and wall to wall. One of the things they do here is every 10 years, they redo everything top to bottom including new appliances. I figure we are good for one redo, maybe 2!

I had someone tell me on a thread that if I "didn't know which stamps I had, my collection was too big". There have been some great items show up in the auctions lately in The US and Canada. If I wasn't checking my want list it would have taken forever checking my album continuously. I know I use Scott's numbers and some of you don't but I can handle that when it happens. I still prefer numbers with the item, but I can handle that if I have to. I must say it's very difficult with some countries where a lot of the stamps are similar, for me the problem is Poland and Russia if they are not numbered, but I'm not complaining since numbering everything is a lot of work. The main point I'm trying to make is that the want list in front of me makes life so much easier. And thanks to all the sellers for the great items that show up every day!! And thanks to all the sellers who number your auction items - it makes life so much easier. I can understand why approvals are not numbered - for a few cents per stamp it really is not worth the time.
