This is a current stamp shop in Edinburgh, Scotland.

I must admit that the photo of "Bob" was not taken yesterday or the day before or even five years ago!! However the shop has not changed much over the intervening years. They hold an auction every couple of months which is well attended and lots vary from £10 to £500 with the occasional lot at £2000.00.
There was another stamp shop in Edinburgh until last year (Tom Brown's Stamp Shop). Their landlord would not renew their lease but they are currently looking for premises.
The owner runs an auction every few months. He runs his business his way. He is not looking to make a fast buck or increase his business by 100 fold. He is just happy with what he does.

Even back in the day (say, the 1980's through 2000) most stamp stores in my part of the country also sold coins. And even then, the emphasis seemed to be on coins. But they usually had a "stamp guy" working, a good selection of supplies and albums, and usually a nice selection of stamps in glass cases. This is one of the stores in Louisville, Kentucky that is still around, albeit just selling coins now.

There's still 10 stamp shops in Tel Aviv if you are ever over this way. They do not all open every day, all day but it's quite easy to spend a whole day popping from one to the other for a browse or buy.
I was in TA last week and noticed one had closed. It was one of those typical old-fashioned shops with 'stuff' everywhere and everything made from wood with little room to sit. Loved that place. So 11 is now 10.
There were 13 stamp shops when I first arrived here in 1991. They are all within walking distance of each other too !!
As a transplanted Brit, it's sad to see the demise of Stamp shops in London. But there are still some good ones around the UK including the one shown by Brechinite. The newest Stamp Shop is Postal Pursuits in the arcade at Letchworth, Herts.
Experiences in all of these and others was mostly good.

Monmouth Coin and Stamp shop in Red Bank, NJ is still there! At least it was a month ago when I drove by. I have made a mental note to go there next time I'm in the town.
Since you asked about memories, when I was 14 or 15, they had a huge box of old covers to sort through. That became the basis for my New Jersey postmark collection.
I live less than an hour from The Stamp Center (Dutch Country Auctions) in Delaware. I am ashamed to say I haven't been there yet, but have passed it many times on Route 202 headed to other locations.

The US is over 3,500,000 square miles in size. With 68 stamp shops that comes to an average of one stamp shop every 51,000 square miles.

I also find the word "surprising" interesting. I wonder what the writer of that comment was thinking the actual number was. North Carolina does not have any listed but an Internet search shows a couple. A few years back I wanted some glassines and contacted one.

Updated the list with Delaware, pigdoc. That sounds like a good stamp shop. What do they have there, and what was it like?
My list was cut and pasted from the Linns link that ikeyPikey referenced above, which has been recently updated since I made my post.
If you look at the list, most of these have some other business endeavor. The majority are also coin shops, or sell comic books, ball cards, or rocks. The one listed in Iowa is Coins, Stamps 'n' Stuff in the suburbs of Des Moines. In the old days, it was a true stamp shop and was just called Stamps 'n' Stuff. Now, it is mainly a coin shop, with the stamp section shrinking smaller each time I go in there. The "Stuff" in the front of the store used to be antiques, then it was postcards and covers, now it is rocks. There used to be a stamp shop called Tuva in Omaha, Nebraska, which is not on my list. The last time I was there, they had tubs and tubs of ball cards stacked up everywhere. If you say you were there a couple years ago, or even a few months ago, there's no guarantee they are still in business today selling stamps.

Here's another UK stamp shop. It's on the main street in Apsley, just south of Hemel Hempstead. It's called Stamps, Coins and Gifts. The elderly chap who runs it told me he collects forgeries.

Dutch Country down in Wilmington, Delaware has been around for a long time. Wasn't long after I moved to the area in 1985 that I found the place. Much of my US Classics collection was gathered there back then, from the monthly Bid Board. It was always a rowdy scene the Saturday that the Bid Board came down...
When I was there recently, I asked if Keith had retired yet. He's still active in the business, but I think their formerly bustling auction schedule has slowed down a bit. I'm sure the rise of eBay didn't help that situation much...
While I was there, I happened to overhear a familiar conversation between one of the managers and a customer:
C: I'd like to sell these old stamps, how much are they worth?
M: Well, you see, back in the 1940s, when these stamps were in use, the most common postage rate was 3c. So, what you have here are mostly very common stamps.
C: Oh,..I see....thanks.

All of these actual stamp shops would have that conversation daily, with somebody.
While at my local stamp shop, I dug through the pile of used black Vario pages, and found a few "keepers." I bought a couple packs of new clear Vario 2-pocket pages for postcards and registered covers that I need to see both sides displayed in my albums. I looked through the red boxes and the bookcase of albums/collections. They have two large plastic tubs of loose stamps, one USA and one foreign, at 5 cents per stamp. I noticed some used blocks in the foreign tub, so I dug through it for over an hour, never got to the bottom, just a mish-mash of old approvals and all kinds of "stuff" in that tub. It was fun. I sat at a long table with 3 other men, one looking at stamps and the other two were looking through a large, heavy, cloth bag of buffalo nickels. They said they were just volunteering to help the owner look for readable dates on these old nickels, but most of them were worn down beyond the point of being considered "collectable." There were many more bags to look through, as the owner had bought a huge horde of buffalo nickels. I asked, "What was he going to do with the worn down buffalo nickels?" The owner was just going to give them away, to other local businesses in the area. They, in turn, could offer their customers a free buffalo nickel and his business card, hoping to stimulate interest in the coin-collecting hobby, and bring traffic to his shop. I thought it was a good idea. Do you think it would work?

Re the reference to Tuva in Omaha, I was there a week or so ago and your description is right on. They used to carry cards, coins and stamps. Now it seems mostly cards. I suspect the owner who is getting up in years, may be getting ready to cash in. Sort of sad but unsurprising.

In a parallel universe, one of the arguments defending Real Meat vs Fake Meat is that the land used to graze cattle is of little use for anything else, whereas growing the plant proteins etc required for plant-based meat substitutes takes place on intensively farmed land, creating agricultural waste & pollutants much closer to human populations, and drawing down fresh water from the North American aquifer, and and and.
If only cattle could graze on CTOs ...

Richard the owner sold for several years on ebay and decided to open the shop. He still sells on ebay as well.

My wife and I recently took a fall vacation to Branson, Missouri, USA. While she shopped the stores on Main Street, I spent a couple hours enjoying Main Street Philatelics, an actual old-fashioned stamp shop. It was like stepping back in time, loaded with stuff to look through, lots of stamps, and shelves full of philatelic literature and books. Due to an ongoing health condition, the owner could only be open from 10am to 2pm. As I looked through boxes of stamps on 107 cards, I chatted with the owner. He said he was going to a stamp show in Joplin, but he no longer had the strength to load his stock into his vehicle himself. He now paid a man $50 to load it, then at the show $50 to unload it, then after the show $50 to reload it, and back to his shop, another $50 to unload it again. He was still determined to do stamp shows, bless his soul. I looked at all kinds of covers, collections, and lots. Two hours time flew by in a flash.
I settled up with him for my purchases, and as I headed for the door, he excitedly had to show me something. It was an old metal box. He opened it up, and he handed me a hammer. It was an old U.S. post office cancellation device. I had never handled one before, but the wood handle was worn as smooth as glass, and the head was a steel duplex cancel from a small post office that I just cannot recall the town name. Feeling the weight in my hand, I realized the job of an old postal clerk was physically like that of an old carpenter, both swinging a similar-style hammer all day.
I highly recommend a stop at Main Street Philatelics if you ever make the trip to Branson, and enjoy the experience of an actual stamp stop while you still can.

My three daughters and I make an annual trek to Branson the week after Christmas for a couple days. Last year, I stared longingly through the glass in front, but he was not open while I was there.

The Branson stamp shop owner is taking experimental treatments, so he is subject to good days and bad days of daily health. The store being open is rather hit or miss.
I learned on another forum that Lincoln Stamp and Coin in Worchester, Massachusetts has closed November 1, 2019. I will remove it from the list above. See link below...

If you take the time to read the story, the truth is that the change is social interaction. Instead of a group of acquaintances meeting for an auction and a chat, we have the internet - a dubious form of communication at the best of times. This is not to knock the internet. Without it stamp collectors in particular would be a much more isolated group. That being said, typing into a screen is a weak substitute. I regret the passing of these elders, mostly gentlemen, it is true, but I regret their passing and salute them for their efforts.

The owner, Mr. Bernstein was a delight to chat with, and made me a good deal on some merchandise. He indicated he's going to try to get back to doing some shows. It sounded like his treatments - not sure what ailed him - were over.

I'm from Nova Scotia and can remember several stamp stores over the years, all of them closed now. I know there are a couple of you in SOR that are from NS. Do any of you know of any actual stamp stores in the province, not people selling out of their homes but one with an actual store front. There was one in Dartmouth that closed a couple years ago, maybe called Lighthouse Stamps, but I'm not sure. I believe the owner of Moody Blue Stamps died recently, but he dealt from his house. I know a couple coin shops sell a few stamps but are there any real stamp stores left?

Amazingly in my city, we do have a tiny little hole-in-the-wall bricks and mortar stamp shop. There is no stamp club within 50 miles, but we have this little shop that has been here for decades. An individual fellow owns and runs it. I asked him today if he gets much business, as I myself have only been there twice and have not seen other customers, (and I've noticed there's not much variety in his merchandise). He said he is happy if he makes enough each month just to cover the rent. He is retired and he said it's a way for him to get out of the house and not drive his wife crazy -- he putters with his stamps all day and helps the occasional customer.
So basically, he's running it as a hobby, and not as a profitable business.
We were chatting about how difficult it is to get many people interested in the hobby these days, and he mentioned that a fellow stopped in last week for some regular postage stamps - thinking that's what the shop was for - he sold him some commemoratives and the fellow thought they were so interesting, he started a collection on the spot.
I'm thinking of asking him if I can create and post an interest list for customers to see, and maybe we can get a local club started. We'll see....

I was going to mention that wonderful shop in Ottawa, but I was beaten to it by the proprietors!
I've been there twice now, and am planning a trip black in the near future, but when the weather is nice for a long drive. Get there at 10, have lunch at Pints and Quarts, then back for more stamping, then home.

I've found another UK stamp and coin shop. It's the Coin and Stamp Centre, at 35a High Street, Hungerford, in Berkshire. Nigel Montgomery, the owner, told he's just opened the shop. His website is philatelicheritage.co.uk. Lots of stamps and stuff.
As well as lots of stamps, he had about a dozen fat looseleaf albums, Scott and Minkus and others, some really full of stamps. He said they're £35 each. I didn't buy any - I couldn't handle a massive load of stamps from countries I don't collect! But I did buy a ring binder full of empty Prinz pages - loads of them - for a printzly £15.
I'm sure he'd filletted the collections for the good items, but this would be a great start for beginning a ww collection.

Bernie down in Branson is a great person -- I've known him for years as he would be at all the stamp shows here in St. Louis. He has a huge library of philatelic literature -- if there's something you're looking for, he just may have it. Several years ago at show he had set aside some material for me to look at, and I picked up a great Danish West Indies #4 with a numeral cancel from Lubeck, which is a toughie!

I must admit that the photo of "Bob" was not taken yesterday or the day before or even five years ago!! However the shop has not changed much over the intervening years. They hold an auction every couple of months which is well attended and lots vary from £10 to £500 with the occasional lot at £2000.00.
There was another stamp shop in Edinburgh until last year (Tom Brown's Stamp Shop). Their landlord would not renew their lease but they are currently looking for premises.
The owner runs an auction every few months. He runs his business his way. He is not looking to make a fast buck or increase his business by 100 fold. He is just happy with what he does.

Even back in the day (say, the 1980's through 2000) most stamp stores in my part of the country also sold coins. And even then, the emphasis seemed to be on coins. But they usually had a "stamp guy" working, a good selection of supplies and albums, and usually a nice selection of stamps in glass cases. This is one of the stores in Louisville, Kentucky that is still around, albeit just selling coins now.

There's still 10 stamp shops in Tel Aviv if you are ever over this way. They do not all open every day, all day but it's quite easy to spend a whole day popping from one to the other for a browse or buy.
I was in TA last week and noticed one had closed. It was one of those typical old-fashioned shops with 'stuff' everywhere and everything made from wood with little room to sit. Loved that place. So 11 is now 10.
There were 13 stamp shops when I first arrived here in 1991. They are all within walking distance of each other too !!
As a transplanted Brit, it's sad to see the demise of Stamp shops in London. But there are still some good ones around the UK including the one shown by Brechinite. The newest Stamp Shop is Postal Pursuits in the arcade at Letchworth, Herts.
Experiences in all of these and others was mostly good.

Monmouth Coin and Stamp shop in Red Bank, NJ is still there! At least it was a month ago when I drove by. I have made a mental note to go there next time I'm in the town.
Since you asked about memories, when I was 14 or 15, they had a huge box of old covers to sort through. That became the basis for my New Jersey postmark collection.
I live less than an hour from The Stamp Center (Dutch Country Auctions) in Delaware. I am ashamed to say I haven't been there yet, but have passed it many times on Route 202 headed to other locations.

The US is over 3,500,000 square miles in size. With 68 stamp shops that comes to an average of one stamp shop every 51,000 square miles.

Updated the list with Delaware, pigdoc. That sounds like a good stamp shop. What do they have there, and what was it like?
My list was cut and pasted from the Linns link that ikeyPikey referenced above, which has been recently updated since I made my post.
If you look at the list, most of these have some other business endeavor. The majority are also coin shops, or sell comic books, ball cards, or rocks. The one listed in Iowa is Coins, Stamps 'n' Stuff in the suburbs of Des Moines. In the old days, it was a true stamp shop and was just called Stamps 'n' Stuff. Now, it is mainly a coin shop, with the stamp section shrinking smaller each time I go in there. The "Stuff" in the front of the store used to be antiques, then it was postcards and covers, now it is rocks. There used to be a stamp shop called Tuva in Omaha, Nebraska, which is not on my list. The last time I was there, they had tubs and tubs of ball cards stacked up everywhere. If you say you were there a couple years ago, or even a few months ago, there's no guarantee they are still in business today selling stamps.

Dutch Country down in Wilmington, Delaware has been around for a long time. Wasn't long after I moved to the area in 1985 that I found the place. Much of my US Classics collection was gathered there back then, from the monthly Bid Board. It was always a rowdy scene the Saturday that the Bid Board came down...
When I was there recently, I asked if Keith had retired yet. He's still active in the business, but I think their formerly bustling auction schedule has slowed down a bit. I'm sure the rise of eBay didn't help that situation much...
While I was there, I happened to overhear a familiar conversation between one of the managers and a customer:
C: I'd like to sell these old stamps, how much are they worth?
M: Well, you see, back in the 1940s, when these stamps were in use, the most common postage rate was 3c. So, what you have here are mostly very common stamps.
C: Oh,..I see....thanks.

All of these actual stamp shops would have that conversation daily, with somebody.
While at my local stamp shop, I dug through the pile of used black Vario pages, and found a few "keepers." I bought a couple packs of new clear Vario 2-pocket pages for postcards and registered covers that I need to see both sides displayed in my albums. I looked through the red boxes and the bookcase of albums/collections. They have two large plastic tubs of loose stamps, one USA and one foreign, at 5 cents per stamp. I noticed some used blocks in the foreign tub, so I dug through it for over an hour, never got to the bottom, just a mish-mash of old approvals and all kinds of "stuff" in that tub. It was fun. I sat at a long table with 3 other men, one looking at stamps and the other two were looking through a large, heavy, cloth bag of buffalo nickels. They said they were just volunteering to help the owner look for readable dates on these old nickels, but most of them were worn down beyond the point of being considered "collectable." There were many more bags to look through, as the owner had bought a huge horde of buffalo nickels. I asked, "What was he going to do with the worn down buffalo nickels?" The owner was just going to give them away, to other local businesses in the area. They, in turn, could offer their customers a free buffalo nickel and his business card, hoping to stimulate interest in the coin-collecting hobby, and bring traffic to his shop. I thought it was a good idea. Do you think it would work?

Re the reference to Tuva in Omaha, I was there a week or so ago and your description is right on. They used to carry cards, coins and stamps. Now it seems mostly cards. I suspect the owner who is getting up in years, may be getting ready to cash in. Sort of sad but unsurprising.

In a parallel universe, one of the arguments defending Real Meat vs Fake Meat is that the land used to graze cattle is of little use for anything else, whereas growing the plant proteins etc required for plant-based meat substitutes takes place on intensively farmed land, creating agricultural waste & pollutants much closer to human populations, and drawing down fresh water from the North American aquifer, and and and.
If only cattle could graze on CTOs ...

My wife and I recently took a fall vacation to Branson, Missouri, USA. While she shopped the stores on Main Street, I spent a couple hours enjoying Main Street Philatelics, an actual old-fashioned stamp shop. It was like stepping back in time, loaded with stuff to look through, lots of stamps, and shelves full of philatelic literature and books. Due to an ongoing health condition, the owner could only be open from 10am to 2pm. As I looked through boxes of stamps on 107 cards, I chatted with the owner. He said he was going to a stamp show in Joplin, but he no longer had the strength to load his stock into his vehicle himself. He now paid a man $50 to load it, then at the show $50 to unload it, then after the show $50 to reload it, and back to his shop, another $50 to unload it again. He was still determined to do stamp shows, bless his soul. I looked at all kinds of covers, collections, and lots. Two hours time flew by in a flash.
I settled up with him for my purchases, and as I headed for the door, he excitedly had to show me something. It was an old metal box. He opened it up, and he handed me a hammer. It was an old U.S. post office cancellation device. I had never handled one before, but the wood handle was worn as smooth as glass, and the head was a steel duplex cancel from a small post office that I just cannot recall the town name. Feeling the weight in my hand, I realized the job of an old postal clerk was physically like that of an old carpenter, both swinging a similar-style hammer all day.
I highly recommend a stop at Main Street Philatelics if you ever make the trip to Branson, and enjoy the experience of an actual stamp stop while you still can.

The Branson stamp shop owner is taking experimental treatments, so he is subject to good days and bad days of daily health. The store being open is rather hit or miss.

If you take the time to read the story, the truth is that the change is social interaction. Instead of a group of acquaintances meeting for an auction and a chat, we have the internet - a dubious form of communication at the best of times. This is not to knock the internet. Without it stamp collectors in particular would be a much more isolated group. That being said, typing into a screen is a weak substitute. I regret the passing of these elders, mostly gentlemen, it is true, but I regret their passing and salute them for their efforts.

The owner, Mr. Bernstein was a delight to chat with, and made me a good deal on some merchandise. He indicated he's going to try to get back to doing some shows. It sounded like his treatments - not sure what ailed him - were over.

I'm from Nova Scotia and can remember several stamp stores over the years, all of them closed now. I know there are a couple of you in SOR that are from NS. Do any of you know of any actual stamp stores in the province, not people selling out of their homes but one with an actual store front. There was one in Dartmouth that closed a couple years ago, maybe called Lighthouse Stamps, but I'm not sure. I believe the owner of Moody Blue Stamps died recently, but he dealt from his house. I know a couple coin shops sell a few stamps but are there any real stamp stores left?

Amazingly in my city, we do have a tiny little hole-in-the-wall bricks and mortar stamp shop. There is no stamp club within 50 miles, but we have this little shop that has been here for decades. An individual fellow owns and runs it. I asked him today if he gets much business, as I myself have only been there twice and have not seen other customers, (and I've noticed there's not much variety in his merchandise). He said he is happy if he makes enough each month just to cover the rent. He is retired and he said it's a way for him to get out of the house and not drive his wife crazy -- he putters with his stamps all day and helps the occasional customer.
So basically, he's running it as a hobby, and not as a profitable business.
We were chatting about how difficult it is to get many people interested in the hobby these days, and he mentioned that a fellow stopped in last week for some regular postage stamps - thinking that's what the shop was for - he sold him some commemoratives and the fellow thought they were so interesting, he started a collection on the spot.
I'm thinking of asking him if I can create and post an interest list for customers to see, and maybe we can get a local club started. We'll see....

I was going to mention that wonderful shop in Ottawa, but I was beaten to it by the proprietors!
I've been there twice now, and am planning a trip black in the near future, but when the weather is nice for a long drive. Get there at 10, have lunch at Pints and Quarts, then back for more stamping, then home.

I've found another UK stamp and coin shop. It's the Coin and Stamp Centre, at 35a High Street, Hungerford, in Berkshire. Nigel Montgomery, the owner, told he's just opened the shop. His website is philatelicheritage.co.uk. Lots of stamps and stuff.
As well as lots of stamps, he had about a dozen fat looseleaf albums, Scott and Minkus and others, some really full of stamps. He said they're £35 each. I didn't buy any - I couldn't handle a massive load of stamps from countries I don't collect! But I did buy a ring binder full of empty Prinz pages - loads of them - for a printzly £15.
I'm sure he'd filletted the collections for the good items, but this would be a great start for beginning a ww collection.

I love that phrase, although it did
make my spell check sputter and choke,
a much more descriptive visual than;
"stripped," or "creamed,"
both of which could be misinterpreted.

Bernie down in Branson is a great person -- I've known him for years as he would be at all the stamp shows here in St. Louis. He has a huge library of philatelic literature -- if there's something you're looking for, he just may have it. Several years ago at show he had set aside some material for me to look at, and I picked up a great Danish West Indies #4 with a numeral cancel from Lubeck, which is a toughie!
