I found these 2 items at the local stamp shop in the plastic tub of bulk common stamps. I bought them to see if I could learn more about them. Here is the story that came with them:

Confederated States of America (Dietz #9A)
Ordered by the South from England during the Civil War,
the plate for a 2-cent John C. Calhoun issue was lost in
1862 when the blockade runner carrying it sunk off the
Louisiana coast. This printing was made when the plate
was discovered washed up on shore during the 1920's.

Has anyone ever heard of this story? I would like to find out additional details to learn, "the rest of the story." Please add to this post if you can.

I find it hard to believe that the detail in the engraving was preserved after 60-some years immersed in salt water. Weren't these plates made of steel?

Here is a story about a printing plate sent by ship, but it wasn't lost and it was a different stamp.

Maybe someone got their stories mixed up and embellished it???

Thank you, Randy. Your links tell a much different story, and a plausible explanation for these "stamps." I thought somebody here on Stamporama would know.

My "story" came from the glassine envelope that contained these reprints, as scanned below. It did not make sense, as Paul stated in his post. I guess an embellished story sold more stamps, for more money, back in the day. Kind of shady, if you ask me. By the way, I bought these out of the nickel box, for a grand total of ten cents for the pair.
