I'm looking for first issue dates for some Colombian States. The Constitution of Aug 4, 1886 ended the sovereignty of the states, I believe, but 4 states issued stamps in 1886 so I would like to know if they were first issued before or after Aug 4, 1886. My Scott catalog just gives the year. The issues in question are:

Antioquia 55-63
Cundinamarca 17-22
Santander 4-6
Tolima 36-55

All of those are inscribed United States of Colombia (E. U. de Colombia) instead of Republic of Colombia, but that doesn't necessarily mean they were issued before Aug 4. It just means they MAY have been. Can anyone provide dates or a place to look that up?

I want to differentiate between stamps issued by a sovereign state within the United States of Columbia and a local stamp issued by one of the departments of the Republic of Columbia. I realize that a stamp first issued in July 1886 may not have been purchased or used before August 4, 1886. I just want to know if it's POSSIBLE that a particular stamp COULD have carried the mail for a sovereign state.

The first stamp listed in Scott for Boyaca is 1902, so there were no sovereign issues from there as far as I can tell.

Thanks for any info!

Lars

Yup, just typed it wrong. I have it spelled correctly on the album page.

"Unites States (EU - Estados Unidos de...)of Columbia I have a stamp with double "EU".

Not exactly. What you have is Colombia #62 issued when Colombia was known as United States of Colombia. I'm talking about the state issues from Antioquia, Cundinamarca, Santander, and Tolima issued in 1886. (These listings are after Official stamps and Tax stamps at the end of Colombia). They also used ESTADOS UNIDOS DE COLOMBIA OR EE. UU. DE COLOMBIA. I just assumed that was how they abbreviated it.

I don't want to just assume that if the state stamps have EE. UU. DE COLOMBIA instead of REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA that they were issued before the new Constitution in 1886 that changed the name to Republic. There may have been delays that prevented them from issuing some of those stamps until technically the name should have changed.

The question stands, though. Can anyone tell me where to find the issue dates for the stamps listed?

Hi Lars,

I had a quick look in my SG catalogue and it doesn't help much here.

However, the following may be of interest:

- SG gives a date of 1885 for Cundinamarca SG 17-22 / Sc #17-22.

- SG gives a date of April 1886 for Tolima SG 45-56 / Sc #44-55.

- Just like Scott, SG lists SG 45-56 after the other issues that you refer to, implying that they were also issued in the state period.

I found on net a site "dufime.com/columbia-antioquia-1868-1904/2" two collections with the stamps of Antioquia:

I think you can find too, the other departaments.

Nigel, that helps a lot! If Cundinamarca 17-22 were 1885 and Tolima 45-56/44-55 were April 1886 then they were definitely before Aug 4, 1886. I really wish I could find definitive info on Santander 4-6 because I bought a Santander 6 hoping it would work. The other states I was able to find something clearly before 1886, so I'm interested for purposes of documenting that info on the album page. I'd like to help others navigate this minefield! re: Colombian States

gerom,

I looked at those links and that's what I'm looking for! Antioquia 55-63 were first issued Feb 23, 1886. There were later issues, and some after Aug 4, 1886, but those stamps were indeed available before the Republic and that's all I needed to know.

I tried looking at http://www.dufime.com and https://www.dufime.com, but I can't find anything. Can you provide a similar link for Santander?

That's the only one left unverified.

Thanks!

Lars

re: Colombian States

I should note that in the links gerom provided there was an indication that Antioquia was allowed to continue issuing the same designs after Aug 4, 1886 because they did NOT have "United States of Colombia" on them. Just the State of Antioquia.

Santander, on the other hand, specifically had EE UU DE COLOMBIA on the 1886 issues (Scott 4-6) and REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA on the 1887 issues. That's not PROOF that those stamps were issued before Aug 4, 1886, but at least a strong indication. Hopefully someone can find the answer: What was the first issue date (or at least month) of Colombia/Santander Scott 4-6?
