On a (somewhat expensive) whim Happy I recently purchased a new in the box Frank Godden Deluxe binder complete with clamshell case. It is absolutely beautiful with maroon leather covers, woven silk end plates surrounded by gold leaf borders and the dust case itself is a work of art with an interior case in which the album nestles which is lined with a velvet textured material. I now have about 120 linen hinged and gold edged pages for the binder as well.

Now the magic question is what collection to create in it that would do aesthetic justice to this work of art album yet fit within my budgetary limitations and skill limited capabilities for lettering the pages which will likely not go through any kind of ink or laser printer cleanly due to the linen hinges with which they are constructed (my handwriting whether longhand or printed is NOT going to win any awards!). I am curious what others would envisage for such a collection.

I do like 19th century stamps, especially mint ones, and the Smithsonian album project introduced me to world wide collecting in a way that even a couple of good starts on both a mint and used International Part I collection and a mint only International Parts I through V collection had not ignited interest wise. I have, also, been reading old publications from the 19th century which have announcements of new issues from the 1800's which do drive my interest somewhat. Plus I have a acquired about six different old albums from the 1890s through the 1930s and spent quite a bit of time looking at some really old albums online such as the albums created by Lallier in the 1860s as well as albums by Moens, Schaubek, Yvert, etc. Together these interests do suggest a project oriented around earlier issues. Now the magic question is how to tie them together into a theme that fits the limitations of a single album. Any suggestions?

I suggest that you key all of the things that you wish you could write nicely by hand into a document, and then hire either a) a young girl with beautiful girly handwriting, or b) any accomplished drafting student (architect or civil engineering student who needs a few bucks) to transfer your notes to your pages.

I, BTW, would sit there sucking my thumb, admiring that beautiful binder, and never get around to making a decision or moving forward. Period. Ever. But that's me.

Cheers,

re: Suggestions for a New Frank Godden Deluxe Album

I have been reading the collection description in Sir John Wilson's book, The Royal Philatelic Collection published in 1951, and maybe a representative collection for the British Commonwealth might be a worthwhile use for the album. Perhaps, my one volume answer to George Vth's 300+ volume collection. Happy Still considering and looking at eBay, Hipstamp, and Sandafayre auctions as well as other online offerings for material that might ignite a project. I did see a number of stamps being offered for Switzerland in a current Sandafayre auction that are intriguing for reasons that I completely do not understand.

I am curious if I have pricked anyone's imagination with this thread and would appreciate any thoughts on the subject.

A classic album deserves classic designed stamps, such as this one...

There are so many early engravings that are very attractive. For printing a canon pixma pro works wonders on up to 13 x 19. I'm personally partial to early Newfoundland engravings in the several pictorial series, i.e. not the spirographs or monarchs, but i may be biased since I know all the locations personally.
