Well, Brian, I love it.
Are all the spaces somewhat equally filled ?
If so, I would guess any spaces left would be
of the less common examples.
What do you plan to do?
You could try to learn about these variants
and search for even better examples in Kiloware,
or in the auction section.
Or use what you have as a guide as you create
a parallel collection.
I expect that there is a cut off date when the
original owner stopped adding to his or her,
collection so you can use these as a running start.
New Machins are created every month or so.
Certain values such as the 2p greens or 10p
tans and light browns are still being printed for
use to make up the current postage rates.
What is the highest domination mounted other than
full pound values ?
For instance is it 47p, or 68p, or £1.55, for instance ?
That would provide a clue to where the collection
ends and what would be needed to pick up the collection.

You see many catalogs on Machins but not often organized as you would collect them. The depth equals or exceeds Adminware's specialist pages. It could be a great reference. Of course, you have to trust the owner was correct on the identification. I wonder if they used a checklist (Deegam) but see no numbering system referenced.
I collect Machins but not to this depth (screens, all the value variations, etc).

I wonder what I got myself into with the idea of collecting machin's! That's amazing, the number of varieties for the ½p! I have a lot of used to go through, but most are probably common duplicates. I doubt I'll ever get to that level of specialization!

I really mean no offence - we're all different, but I can't imagine the amount of time needed to collect to this level. Some of the Canadian definitive series can generate crazy detail as well, but not to that extent (I think)!

This has to be the fine art of philately taken to the most excruciatingly complex level that I have ever seen! WOW, the time to find all of these would be just phenomenal.
Personally, I think it would be best sold intact to another Machin specialist to build upon. Have you thought about auctioning the collection here? We have several Machinistas who might bid if the price is right. Or perhaps break into sections? Predecimal, etc?

I also collect Machins, but my especiallization goes up to only 7 different 1/2p varieties!! I think that there is no catalogue that would differentiate up to tenth of millimeter the position of the value indication.
I guess lots of patient and Strong vision would be necessary to differentiate all these varieties.

I have looked at these pages several times,
and I'd love to make a useful comment, but
I am simply green with envy.
Breaking them up would be like chopping off
Venus de Milo's arms.
They could be sold, but I suspect the market
would be limited to a few interested collectors
and someone too lazy or unknowledgeable to do
the effort them selves.
If you want to sell the collection you could
do far better than putting them in the hands
of a possibly uncaring overworked Lotting
assistant.
If so it would be best to scan as many pages
as possible throughout the lot so people can
see how far the collector got.
The best way to do that might be to do sections,
such as the Regionals, Anniversaries, NVIs ,
Elipticals and so on.
Another way to separate sections would be,
the pre-decimals, the values; ½p to 1½p;
13p to about 29p; 30p to perhaps 75p.
The different types of High values large,
and standard 2mm wide.
It would break my heart to see them broken
down any further or put in the hands of a
(shudder), kiloware dealer..

Nice reference collection which, unsurprisingly, makes me think that the best (if least profitable) way to de-accession this collection is to donate it to one of the organizations that maintain reference collections ... RPSL?

Now I know that giving up on Machin was not such a bad decision after all. I did sell my specialty pages and stamps (partially populated) for a song, (and threw in a bag of on paper-everything else) and now my headaches are gone. I tried to sell Machin stamps once on approvals, but it did not meet much interest. I can see how specialists are hypnotized by it, but the average collector....???

The more I mull over the Machin's., the more I see of varieties, the more I want a just a basic set. 1/10 of a mm difference? Wow... I do like the varieties of values and the different colours, but measuring something where the difference is 1/10 of a mm is just too much for me. Gum, paper, phosphor, fluorescence, positioning, ah, just too much!
I did go full-on with Canada's Centennial's and the Prime Ministers & landscapes series, but at least I didn't have to measure to the 1/10th of a mm!
Adminware's basic album pages is probably all I need!

I think from the images of the last page of 18p that it has been made to look better than it is . The top two lines actually only have 2 different stamps, repeated triple.
The various postal cancellations actually, to my mind, take away from the visual look of the page.
Yes I agree that the odd part of a millimetre is taking things to the extreme and would require a quite sophisticated, and expensive, piece of equipment. As well as a steady hand and postmarks in the right places.
But each to his own and if it made the originator happy and busy on perhaps a cold winters day then all to the good.

The small differences between the "H" and ""V" values
often are used to identify different printers or issues
that otherwise are difficult to sort.
The Deegam Handbook lists many of them.
Being meshuggah is not exactly a prerequisite
to collecting Machins, but is does provide
a head start.

Yes, Al that is the way I do things, selecting certain values and digging as deep as I can and then when that seems well worked, another color/value.
As I once told my wife, "At least you will not have to send one of the kids to the local bar to remind me to come home for supper."

My base collecting is based upon SG Concise but I will add screened values, Head A/B, EME, straight edges, general phosphore (LB, CB, PPP) and even some printer differences, I avoid thick/thin values (not to be confused with narrow values, value tablet position, gum,and source (sheet, booklet, etc),

I also include shades, which I realize are often due to a minor inking variation, and PCPs as Glossy, Very glossy and lackluster, also subjective as PCPs were cased by a variation in the coating.
Let us not forget the set, when available of TCTT, TTCT,TTTC and CTTTs and TTCC, TCCTs.

I ignore sheet/booklet/coil and position (cut/torn) unless there is a straight edge or other aspect that makes it unique, Often the prestige booklets have something else different (SG recognized shade, different printing).
