Our local stamp club is going to experiment with having the regular meetings on Zoom video conferencing. I wonder if any of you out there have already experimented with the idea. If you have, please a few words of advice. What works, what does not, what activity was feasible on Zoom. What did not work?

I will post remarks here after our first meeting (next Monday night), should anyone be curious about our experience.
Thanks for any feedback on your own club experience.

All I can say is set your privacy settings or prepare to be zoom-bombed!

I have no idea how to do that as I do not use it.

re: ZOOM local stamp club meeting.

No experience from the local stamp club but several clients have used it for staff meetings as has the church at which my wife works. Key item is that individual users need fairly decent available bandwidth. Rural DSL circuits may be problematic which have 2Mbps or lower outgoing connections. Those users should probably connect without outgoing video capability. Audio only will often work very well and incoming video will, also, generally work reasonably.

I am looking forward to your results!

re: ZOOM local stamp club meeting.

FYI: Zoom bombing is an old problem that is rapidly becoming ancient history. It is still covered by the press which is way behind in updating their material. For the last week Zoom has upgraded their security several times a day. I use Zoom daily (more than once) and every day the measures put in place are more intrusion-resistant. Meetings are all secured by passwords. The passwords have been beefed up (initially they were just 6 numbers) with alphanumeric and upper lower case requirements. Passwords are no longer accessible easily. Some level of encryption has been activated already. A waiting room is set up so that the "Host" can allow admission to the meeting on a case by case basis, and prevent "bombing" by unwanted guests.
Now like all services, including FB, yahoo, Microsoft, Google etc, I don't know how much data they collect, but their business model is not geared to selling user data but rather to collecting subscription fees. That is why free sessions are capped at 40 minutes. Want more, you need to pay (monthly or annually). So I am optimistically confident that they do not collect all the stuff that is on your device, like Google FB Microsoft etc and others routinely do.
Now for the forthcoming meeting, we are trying to figure out what activities we could have on line given the limitations of video screen size, bandwidth etc. Clearly auctions will have to go. We are looking at adapting the "show and tell presentations" of our meetings to what can be done on a computer screen, with less than ideal resolution.
More later, as we explore. If any one has ideas about stamp club activities that could be run on a video conference screen (computer size, not corporate meeting size), let's hear it.
Thanks in advance.
rrr...

PS: anyone has a good philatelic quiz we could run? like what year was the first stamp issued? What year was the first air mail stamp issued etc..etc.. (I would need the questions and the answers please! I think 20 questions will be enough)

re: ZOOM local stamp club meeting.

We held our first Zoom stamp club meeting 2 weeks ago (Nevada Stamp Study Society) and will be having the second meeting today. With membership of about 60, there were 7 attendees. Several people tried to join the call but could not due to "technical" difficulties. About 20% of members have no email or computer.
The meeting went well and was more informational highlighting current and coming activities and latest philatelic news. Also was a way to check in with other members.
I think presentations would be a good use of the meeting. I am experimenting with putting a Power Point slide show up on the share screen and may see how that goes today. Perhaps one of the APS topical videos could be shared also.
Thought about trying to do auctions somehow, but with only 7 participants, that did not make much sense.
If any more ideas come from today's meeting, I'll post them.
Good Luck!

re: ZOOM local stamp club meeting.

I spend a lot of my professional life in conference calls with PowerPoint presentations, just not on the Zoom network. From what I understand Zoom has limitations of time lengths and number of participants for the free version. I’m more accustomed to using Skype meetings and Go To Meeting.

I do have an hour long presentation on my Ben Franklin stamp issue that I have done in person for three different stamp clubs. I’d be happy to do this online for any stamp club that asks. I also have a follow up presentation on the private perforations on same stamp, created at urging of Club after I did the first one.

re: ZOOM local stamp club meeting.

Yesterday on Monday night at 7 PM we held second Zoom video conferencing Stamp club meeting.
Thanks first to Bruce Marsden of the APS for joining our meeting and we look forward to your presentation next week. we were 11 attending. It was a decent number to have a semi formal meeting without too many restrictions. For larger club meetings you may need more drastic meeting management tools (like host muting all except the person called on to talk)

Here are some remarks and suggestions that may benefit those who want to try running their stamp club meetings on Zoom.

1. Get a ZOOM paid subscription in the name of the "host" or moderator. You will need at least an hour or more to have a comfortable meeting. The free version is too limiting. (cost is $15 per month, on a month by month basis)
2. Start the meeting 10-15 minutes earlier than scheduled to assist new members who need coaching and are wrestling technical issues, and even older members who are having technical issues.
3. Establish a talking protocol and order. We asked each one to mute themselves and just un-mute themselves when they are called upon to talk. Host could mute all and assign the order of talking this may be best for large gatherings.
Ask people who want to talk to raise their hand
4.We tried the presentation capability with sharing documents on Zoom and it is perfect to display pages, stamps and any other philatelic material, With a large magnifying capability on your big computer screen, you can even discuss counterfeit characteristic on a single stamp! Cell phone may be too small for viewing.
5. Start and end the meeting on time but allow (in addition to opening early) extra time at the end of the meeting for chit chat.
6. People forget. Remind people of the meeting schedule a day ahead, 15 minutes before the meeting and if necessary by text when the meeting starts, or just before.
I call it Covid-19 short term memory loss. So your membership data must include cell phone, land line and email to be most effective.
7. Auctions may be possible (since u can see the items quite well) but will require separate payment and shipping details). We have not tried it yet.
8. Members who are not competent or fluent with computers etc may need special handling prior to the scheduled meetings. Set up some test runs with them one on one, if needed.
9. From a meeting organizational perspective, the presentations are best done in the second half of the meeting.
Finally, it was fun to see all, talk about shared quarantine experience, about stamps and to open up new resources for the stamp club members, with the help of the APS. I recommend it to other stamp clubs who want to try it.

Good tips! I was in a Zoom meeting on Friday night with guys from my model car club. It was enjoyable and successful so we agreed to do this twice a month. Right now we are using a fellow’s work account. I didn’t know it was $15 a month, so I am going to see if we can get a club account, or I’ll just get my own. It will come in handy right about now!

re: ZOOM local stamp club meeting.

We held our third Zoom Stamp Club meeting today and experimented with video presentations.
It works really well...actually better than passing around a presentation material at the meeting table! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!
We had a presentation by Bruce Marsden of the APS on the stamps of Campione Italy. I had never heard of Campione d'Italia and for those like me, it was a revelation. It is a small part of Italy on Lake Lugano in the south of Switzerland, that is actually an enclave in Switzerland..not physically connected to the Italy land mass. So local issued stamps, for use in Switzerland and Campione, and any foreign destination mail needs extra Swiss stamps. Bruce assembled an amazing collection of stamps and covers and any stamp Club that is interested in a most interesting subject should contact him (sorry Bruce, I am volunteering you).
We also had a presentation by our Club member Ilya Ronin on Post Independence Africa, Congo in particular but also other related African stamps he has a personal connection to. This was done using a software he developed for displaying Club members presentation on line for all to access, and this adds extra capabilities for presentations. More presentations are being uploaded and will be featured at future meetings.
So that is about it. Quarantine has been extended here until May 31, so many more Zoom Video stamp club meetings are in the cards for us.
I will not report any more, but any Club interested in discussing our experience, please message me directly.
rrr...

PS: Stamp clubs may be interested in inviting Guest speakers and in on line video shared presentations. Want to talk? Message me.

I like online meetings as we have been using them at work 100% using Microsoft Teams. You dan hear and see the presentations. Ours do not use cameras for attendees. We rarely have issues with bad connections since most are all VOIP. The worst thing is to have someone with a bad phone connection and make it worse for all.

And you bring up a good point. Local clubs can get guest speakers from anywhere in the world. There could be s speakers circuit if no one wants to make a recording on their presentation.
