Doh! Saar lulled me to sleep. Here's the stamp in question:
All my other copies of this stamp do not have the mark under the "C".
Is this also a known variation?
Sorry & Thanks, Dave.
Hi Dave,
I have 1 copy of this stamp, which has neither the ">" you mention, OR the dot to the left of the 2.
Both Maury and Michel list numerous plate flaws for this stamp, but I do not recognize this specific flaw in any of the descriptions.
To me, the chevron does not seem to be a plate flaw - it looks intentional.
Looked through my 4 copies of this stamp. No marks to be seen... interesting
I have looked at a dozen or more image of Saar 107....
...none have the chevron.
Very curious indeed.
Hi Dave,
I think it is C with "cedille" Michel#100I
If the printing plate was assembled with separate
printing slugs to create the letters and values,
then it could be an easy error to use a "C" with a
cedilla on one stamp per sheet.
And possibly later corrected adding to scarecity.
What is the dot over the word "C???"...Cent?) to the left of the 25. Is this one of the many plate flaws?
Thanks for the info. I have a handful of that stamp but the one I posted was the only one I've noticed with that mark.
From gerom's scan it looks like there may be other artifacts worth looking for in that value (and perhaps others). I'll get my magnifying glass out!
Dave.
As stamps go this is a mess but it shows the same "Error" or mark. I would not have known I had this, but thanks to Hockey nut I decided to actually do some stamp collecting and so began to put things into some order at first, when I remembered this post and had a look.
Another unusual one.
A ">" mark under the C of "Cent".
re: APOLOGIES: SCAN NOW ADDED ...Saar # 107 "Secret Mark" ?
