As a child growing up, on Saturday evening's my multiple brothers and sisters would find small spaces beside our parents and watch great comedians and raconteurs in variety shows on a tiny tv. On the subject of the weekly comedy show:
There is an ongoing (in)famous philatelic joke in Turkey.
When trying to pick up a girl, the man says to the woman, "Let me show you my stamp collection."
This little tidbit is seriously discussed in a film by Umit Topaloglu, which can be accessed on YouTube: Bir Filateli Oykusu--A Philately Story, 2010. 45:34 minutes.

ArtStamp,
Thanks for sharing the video from Turkey showing people talking about stamp collecting, both collectors and dealers. It was very interesting hearing about stamp collecting from a very different part of the world. I found the video by searching YouTube using the initial part of the title "Bir Filateli Oykusu" as a search term if others are interested as well.
One of the best parts of pulling up the video was seeing a huge range of additional videos about stamp collecting from all over the world.

I love British comedy.... I actually purchased a multiregion DVD player recently so I could re-watch some of the "classics" without subscribing to multiple streaming services. As a teen, I was exposed to several great shows via PBS, like 'Allo 'Allo, Are You Being Served?, the Blackadder series, and others. MTV carried The Young Ones for a while, and about five years ago, I discovered Dylan Moran's Black Books.
There is an acerbic wit to Britcoms that makes them so much different than American TV comedy. Thankfully, I was also able to get my fix of more current Doctor Who and Sherlock via BBC America here in the States.
I also love Canadian comedies like Corner Gas, Kids in the Hall, and the like. The only Michael Moore project I can stomach is "Canadian Bacon", with the late John Candy as a Niagara Falls (US side) sheriff who mounts a guerilla mission into Canada to rescue his girlfriend from free health care at a hospital in the nation's capital (you know, Toronto...)
One of the finest scenes is when Candy is pulled over on the QEW in a stolen Public Works truck, which he has grafittoed with Anti-Canadian slogans. Dan Ackroyd plays an OPP motorcycle cop, who produces a can of spray paint, and orders him to duplicate all of the graffiti in French to comply with their bilingual signage requirements.

My grandfather was friends with Foster Brooks (they had worked in radio together in Rochester, NY). I met him at Grandpa's funeral in 1985, and was very confused to discover that he hadn't really had a drink in more than twenty years!
Thanks for posting that one, every time I see "The Lovable Lush", I think of my grandfather.... (that doesn't sound like it should be a good thing, but it is...)

Thank you Ian, another pair of brilliant comedians, we were so lucky growing up with such talent.
Sheepshanks:- many, many moons ago I was having dinner with one of my suppliers and all through the meal we talked about various comedy shows that we liked and we covered quite a few from radio and television.
Near the end of the meal we realised that every comedy show we discussed had been produced by the BBC and not one from ITV had got even a fleeting mention.
There were a few that I recall from ATV/ITV, The Arthur Haynes show, Benny Hill, Canned Carrot although not sure whether some were BBC, but certainly for quality and production they were no where near the beeb.
Charlie Drake, Tony Hancock, Jimmy Edwards in take it from here (ello, ello, ello), the navy lark and of course all the radio shows with Kenneth Horne and Kenneth Williams.
The one memorable thing about all of them is that there was no coarse language and no taking the rise out of some poor soul in the audience.
I forgot about Charlie Drake and his catchphrase:-
"Hello my darlings".
I remember watching his show, which was a live show, and the show was taken off air because he had knocked himself out cold during one of his sketches.
Apparently one of the stage construction crew had "repaired" the book case he was thrown through, not realising it had been deliberately weakened. The cast then followed the script and picked him up and threw him through a window.
You can see in the video that he is a dead weight as they struggle to lift him.
Aye his television career was never the same after that incident.

re: Weekly Comedy Show
I love British comedy....

Do you know how to spell "Canada"? C-eh-N-eh-D-eh !!!
Happy Canada Day to all my friends north of the border!!!!!

Musicman,
My grandfather was friends with Foster Brooks (they had worked in radio together in Rochester, NY).

Excellent clips.
You also forced me to finally Google "Jings!....Crivvens!....Help ma Boab!" What a rabbit hole that was!
Geoff
re: Weekly Comedy Show
The words Jings! Crivvens! Help Ma Boab! are used singly or as a group in cartoons from The Sunday Post Newspaper. They started in 1936 and are still running today.
The two cartoons are "Oor Wullie" and "The Broons"

Vic:- Thanks for reminding me of that one.
Of course Kenneth Williams was in so many radio shows like Round the Horne, Beyond our Ken, Hancocks Half Hour to name a few, and most of the Carry On films.
His role as Julius Caesar in Carry On Cleo was superb and his immortal lines of
"Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in fer me!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNOHxktvo58&list=PLKbM5tuuJbfonH4kr8C3pdOmhu8dfdZBZ&index=2

re: Weekly Comedy Show
Sheepshanks:- many, many moons ago I was having dinner with one of my suppliers and all through the meal we talked about various comedy shows that we liked and we covered quite a few from radio and television.
Near the end of the meal we realised that every comedy show we discussed had been produced by the BBC and not one from ITV had got even a fleeting mention.
re: Weekly Comedy Show
There were a few that I recall from ATV/ITV, The Arthur Haynes show, Benny Hill, Canned Carrot although not sure whether some were BBC, but certainly for quality and production they were no where near the beeb.
Charlie Drake, Tony Hancock, Jimmy Edwards in take it from here (ello, ello, ello), the navy lark and of course all the radio shows with Kenneth Horne and Kenneth Williams.
The one memorable thing about all of them is that there was no coarse language and no taking the rise out of some poor soul in the audience.
re: Weekly Comedy Show
I forgot about Charlie Drake and his catchphrase:-
"Hello my darlings".
I remember watching his show, which was a live show, and the show was taken off air because he had knocked himself out cold during one of his sketches.
re: Weekly Comedy Show
Apparently one of the stage construction crew had "repaired" the book case he was thrown through, not realising it had been deliberately weakened. The cast then followed the script and picked him up and threw him through a window.
You can see in the video that he is a dead weight as they struggle to lift him.
