I was checking prices for Pony Express mail from 1860 - 1861 online. I thought it would be fantastic to have one until I saw the prices were in the thousands of dollars. Do any of you cover collectors out there have one that you could post a picture of? I doubt if I'll ever be able to afford one, but it would be great to see a few more pictures and hear some stories about how you were lucky enough to get one. It would even be great to be able to see one in person!!! Maybe some day.

re: Pony express

I never collected covers BUT
Some 20+ years ago I got a large binder from an estate of US Locals with originals, forgeries and reprints including the Pony Express stamp.
The Ponies are my favorite of the locals so a sample...

A Genuine position 11. Positions are easily determined by dots, spurs and dashes in the image
Image Not Found

An obvious crude forgery. Heads on the rider & horse are wrong. One of some 25 known forgeries both good and crude
Image Not Found

A Reprint, the horse's mouth is very open, no breath from nostrils, lots of white on rider's hat

re: Pony express

I've been looking through my US specialized, the section on Local Stamps, and this appears to be 143L5. It's too bad it's not used $7500 or tied to cover to Washington $350 000. There must have been a fair number of mint ones lying around when the Pony Express disappeared, even though $190 is still good!
