Good detectoring, (spellcheck did not like that one) now does that make them more or less valuable than if they were cancelled in the country of origin?
If more so, maybe I will get the unfranked mail that arrives here in Canada stamped at my local post office.

Just like this one from the Netherlands with great South Australian Virginia 5120 cancels much better than the dreaded TEXTA

Apparently someone remembered the rule from long ago, that uncancelled stamps on a postal item should be cancelled no matter where they came from. Well done, postie in Virginia!

It also shows that some more thought needs to go into machine cancellers.

If they had been soaked from the paper and separated
so that the only printing was "Virginia" someone
might have thought they had a very unusual postmark.
Somewhere I have a KGV stamp with part of the cancel
"Boston" which I then thought was curious, until I

discovered "Boston in Lincolnshire."

Hi WillLack,

That's a great presentation of your HK cancelled in Australia stamps.

The map is especially helpful!

I've an old handbook from 1980, Hong Kong Arrival Markings by Scamp and Fine, which shows examples of most of yours but I didn't see a MANLY cancellation in their list.

There's also Washington in Tyne and Wear, and Baltimore in County Cork (and a multitude of other place names that were "exported" from Europe to the Americas, but mostly the old place remained better known than the new). One of my teachers at middle school had a friend who collected letters that were sent from a place in one country to another place with the same name elsewhere. Not sure what has become of his collection, it sure was instructive and amusing at the same time.

It is my plan to write a new one with uptodate information and colour pictures of the cancels, it is a plan for my retirement -a few years off though.... quite how many collectors there will be to buy it then remains to be seen. I am in my early 50's and at shows and society meetings I am nearly always the youngest person there....
