Hi TonyM,

SG calls these "machine labels" and lists the designs and standard face values at the end of their main Germany listing in their Germany catalogue.

These German ones are usually called "Klussendorfs" after the manufacturer of the machines.

It's best to keep them out of direct sunlight as the thermal printing of the face value etc. can fade quite quickly.

They are called in German "Automatenmarken" ATM stamps, listed in Michel catalog

The values on these stamps are applied by a needle printer via an inked ribbon, similar to a typewriter. The ink does not easily fade, and the stamps can be soaked in water. Robust, old-fashioned technology.

Modern counter labels and variable value stamps from other countries are a different kettle of fish ...
