It seems like this type of foolishness is showing up all over E-Bay.

If you follow the link you will find what appears to be a very common stamp at an absolutely ridiculous price with an even more inane description.

Are there people out there stupid enough to fall for this or are the sellers just having a bit of fun.

If this was SOR this would be taken down almost immediately! Have a look and also check out some of the other items for sale!!

I don't know how to make this link live, just highlight it and open it.
Maybe someone could explain how to post a link and make it live.
Edit: I deleted the link as Ian suggested! It makes the whole thread easier to follow. If you need to see the item the link went to a couple people supplied shortcuts!

My purpose was to pose a problem. Stamp collecting is a fun thing to do and I think people making these kinds of stamp offers are making fun of something I like and enjoy. Is it even remotely possible that these clowns are trying to suck someone into making an offer that is totally out to lunch?

Try this; type"link" in brackets,
enter the entire coded link.
add a "comma" followed by "click here"
type"/link" in brackets
The trick is that to do this you need, both the magic link, and a secret word such as "Here" or cleverly "tick here". The two parts must be sequential, separated by a "comma". No spaces.
Naturally, do not use the quotation marks, delete them, as they are here for illustration instead of the actual brackets. If I showed the brackets, the application would have a hissy fit, trying to figure out what I am trying to accomplish.

It works and the result is; (Drum roll please)

click here

Failing that you could "highlight" the link " as mentioned below , and click the "link tab," beneath the word "press" in the instructions somewhere near the center of the indexed features below.
Select(highlight) the text above and press a format button:

Voila ! Le résultat.

Go to your original post, click on edit, then delete all of the url past the item number (as I show in my previous post).
To make a link live you just need to highlight the url and then click the link button below the message box.
To verify your link works, preview the message and then right click on the green highlighted wording and press "T", it will then open in a new tab.

Let my add something I learned a long time ago.
I have attended many lectures and classes, as
well as taught somewhat technical classes myself.
I found that when I asked a question and got an
answer, there would be six or eight others students
who listened with an intensity that indicated
that they were just too shy to ask the question
themselves.
When teaching, I loved student's questions as it
was an immediate feedback.
Plus, glancing at those listeners hanging back,
I would see that same puzzled intensity.

Here at SoR there is seldom a question that does
not draw an answer, and a satisfied answerer.

re: What is the point of this?

Because the link has no breaks or spaces in it and the DB uses the maximum width available to try to fit it in the page without wrapping it.

A link has two parts. The first part is the actual link, the second part, after the comma, can be edited to show whatever message you want. If you have a long link, edit the second half into a prompt, rather than a copy of the link.

If you look on ebay right now, there is a seller who is offering a collection of maybe a couple thousand common stamps in an old Minkus Comprehensive album. The price? $150,000. In the description, the seller also indicates that he would be willing to take a house in the Nashville area in trade. Anybody own some real estate down there?

Really, if I was trying to palm off a stamp that was worth a few cents I'd try asking maybe $25 for it, figuring that price would attract suckers more than things costing a fortune.

re: What is the point of this?

I just sent the seller this message;

"I have a total of ten copies of this exact same stamp with the very same cancel type on them;
I will sell you each one for $5000.00, for a total of $50,000.00.
You, in turn, can sell them here for your list price of $39,599.00 and make a tidy profit of $395,990.00.
All you need to do is send 10% down and the rest when you receive the stamps.

I look forward to your reply."

Up until now I was wondering how I could afford to build a new house my better half wants. (Or as she says, NEEDS) (just kidding) I literally have a bunch of these. And if it is the postmark that is rare, I have many more. Now we can afford that little mansion that Vanderbilt built in North Carolina. Hope it's still available. :}

re: What is the point of this?

I just sent the seller this message;

"I have a total of ten copies of this exact same stamp with the very same cancel type on them;
I will sell you each one for $5000.00, for a total of $50,000.00.
You, in turn, can sell them here for your list price of $39,599.00 and make a tidy profit of $395,990.00.
All you need to do is send 10% down and the rest when you receive the stamps.

I look forward to your reply."

re: What is the point of this?

Up until now I was wondering how I could afford to build a new house my better half wants. (Or as she says, NEEDS) (just kidding) I literally have a bunch of these. And if it is the postmark that is rare, I have many more. Now we can afford that little mansion that Vanderbilt built in North Carolina. Hope it's still available. :}
