I've been doing the same but the sorting is of an
eight+ pound accumulation of worldwide. That is
just one step. Once they are in the proper white
business envelopes and the envelopes in the correct
plastic shoeboxes, I will sort by year, one nation
at a time and mount what ever attracts me.
Last week during the North Texas ice and snow storm,
we had to evacuate to a Best Western motel for about
four days as the power lines went down and the whole
town (Panhandle) went dark.
No sooner did my son buy the gas fired generator that
I had suggested last summer after a nasty thunderstorm
and get it all connected than the power was restored.
At the time that the decision was made to go into town
(Amarillo) I grabbed some clothes, the needed meds, and
the Channel Islands album. Hinges, my favorite 906 lethal,
tweezers, a selection of 5X and 10X magnifiers, along
with a small tray of appropriate 102 cards.
So I spent the best part of that week squinting at Jersey
and Isle of Man stamps that had the year number usually
in the bottom margin. HUZZAR
I have seven of the large red stamp 102 card sized boxes
(Trays) full of stamps I have bought this last year, many,
but not all, in the SoR Auctions and Approval sites. So
it was easy to scoop up the Channel Islands and IoM album.
And that is how I spent that week and "Jersey" is finally
just about up to date, although there are quite a few
open spaces. For Guernsey, I will have to use the SG catalog
and presort on to Vario stock pages by year myself.
But first I plan to go through the stuffed shoebox of ww
mixed and sadly I am trying to suspend all new purchases
except a few beauties I am hoping to see put up in the
auction.
So, I agree that all issuing countries should " ... put
a year date on the stamp. ..." in the margin.
How hard can that be ?
Or cost ?
I guess that we should not complain, years ago
issuing printing agencies did not bother to
announce such banal details as a new printing or
a new plate put into use.
I was just preparing to settle in for the winter we usually get here in Michigan. Now in Nov we usually see 30-60 degree F, and last year on this day we got almost 12" snow. Today? Snow? Nope, we hit 75. So outside I went, my stamp sorting will need to wait for another day.
Hi cdj1122
I know that Canada used to put a year date on their stamps, do they still do that?

I mostly use Stampworld for sorting if there is no date on the stamp, using the "Denomination" feature. This works very well for me. At least faster than paging through a catalog.
Well the weather turned nasty this past weekend so decided to start sorting the envelopes of accumulated Australian stamps.
Boy does it make you appreciate those countries that put a year date on the stamp. Working into envelopes by year periods, lots of spares/duplicates, an open Scott catalogue next to me for reference. Would be nice if there was an index that used the wording on the stamp and maybe when Michael buys Scott he can put the airmails back into the normal year run.
Still it gives me something to keep me occupied now the weather is down to minus 15c.
Guess the next task will be to print off the Steiner pages and work the pages and envelopes together. At least the early stamps are the only ones with a great variance in watermarks, perfs etc. My cut off date will probably be early 1990's, so not too bad.
Only three more large envelopes and a couple of old albums left to sort and a few to soak so hopefully done by Christmas.
Fun and games.
