Hi Bob,
Looks like "AEV", and looks like it is part of the cancellation on the stamp.
Below that, also in all-caps, I see _ERGE and below that I also see LIBRO (book).
Some kind of slogan cancel, I guess...
I tried googling Italian words that end in AEV, and came up empty. The stamp honors Luigi Vanvitelli, architect.
I can't associate the cancellation with any significant event in 1952 Italy...

Now this is a loooong shot, but here goes...
AEV (or AAEV, if this is only part of the cancel) could refer to "Archivio Architetto Enzo Venturelli", a private archive with the Turin State Archives, or to the architect himself. Venturelli was a prominent Italian architect during the 1950's, so a contemporary architecture subject wouldn't be out of place as a cancellation on a stamp celebrating an 18th century architect. An archive could also explain the "libro" reference.....
I may not be very good at puzzles, but I have fun smashing pieces in where they don't really fit!
