Had to take up my Great Britain collection again after binge watching The Crown this past week. The stamp issues for Great Britain start with the penny stamp from 1840 that opened communications via pre-paid mail and started a revolution in the availability of mail access across the world although my first stamp in the album is Scott #33 currently.

My collection will cover from 1840 to 1990 for 150 years of the use of postage stamps. I am using a Scott Specialty pre-printed album for my collection in a Scott 3-ring binder.

Today I spent just under four hours at a local stamp dealer going through a number of available albums looking for stamps to add to my collection. There are lots of challenging non-face different stamps with watermarks and perforation variations. New additions to my collection for the day included several stamps issued from 1911-12 (Scott #'s 153, 154, 157 and 158), some later issues from the 1920's and 1930's (Scott #'s 281 through 285), a group of stamps including Castles from the late 1980's and other issues through 1990, and three postage due sets.

re: Great Britain - Queens and Kings from Victoria to Elizabeth II

Interestingly, I found that my Scott album pages go through 1996 so will be looking for about 280 stamps after 1990. Finished completing additions to the pages from a collection in a stock book that I had acquired a few years ago after getting a new batch of Scott mounts and now find my first missing issues in the modern era start with the year 1991.

Of course, there are about 190 different mint stamps missing from the album ending with Scott # 359dp with a total catalog value of $932,000 so this is not likely ever to be completed. I would like to get the total down to the neighborhood of 100 missing stamps over the next year or so which would be quite an accomplishment and provide a significant challenge. And this isn't counting the back of the book stamps for the Offices and additional postage due stamps plus regionals so lots of other items to search for as well!

The Scott page that ends with the 359dp stamp is for a series with phosphor applied only and that page is completely empty for the most recent page in my album for which that is true. And so the hunt begins in earnest. Happy

I must say the designs for the Great Britain stamps from the 1970's through 1990 are very attractive for the most part and have a really nice range of subject matter.

I did notice that the definitive stamps are excluded from the Part II album as they have been moved to separate Machin pages. Those are another level of complexity to identify and collect to completion. At least for now I am excluding them since I don't have the pages for them. (Now the question is whether this is on purpose or not??? Happy ). Not to mention there are much more specialized options for the Machin issues which go beyond even the Scott pages in identifying variant stamps for a truly complete collection. Stamporama has some members who have put a great deal of time into the study and collection of these various issues. If you are interested look for more information in other topics on Stamporama's discussion board.
