I remember when my wife and I started collecting U.S. in the early 1970s. We would sit for an hour with a perforation guide, a watermark detector. a loupe and a colour guide struggling to figure out what one of the early Washington / Franklin stamps might (!) be. It was fun, but very time consuming. I don't advise anyone with patience issues to collect classic U.S., it's got to be the most challenging area for beginning collectors!
My U.S. collection is quite complete except for some of the big money stamps - it took a lot of effort, but it was worth it in the end. Now that I am older I could never consider starting a country like that (if there is one) again. Here would be a very interesting thread - What is the most difficult country (or area) to collect?
I just took a look through my album and, ignoring colour shades, perfs, watermarks, etc.,I found 15 stamps that look like this one. You really need to have possession of the stamp to check it out.
Edit: The problem now-a-days are the people who are having a bit of fun with our hobby. They post stamps like this on E-Bay for huge prices. People look at these and think they have stamps of huge value. Most people ignore these stamps, I really hope none of them sell!!
re: I can’t identify because I am not in possession.
