I was on line trying to find information on the 1950 Groszy overprint since I have several examples among my collection. From the bit of reading I did I ended up confused. Does anyone have a link saved to an article that gives a proper and easy to understand explanation of what was going on, which stamps were done and exactly what the hand stamp looks like for each area? I don't think it has any effect on the value of the stamp and any stamp in existence at that time was eligible to be done. Fakes also seem to exist, which implies there must be some standard to use as comparison. If any one of you has a cache of these stamps I would be interested - just send a personal email.

Thanks Dave - exactly what I wanted. I don't think there are many Poland collectors in the group. Is there a way to search this in the members data base without looking at each person?

Hi Harvey,

Have a look at this site http://groszy.pl/

it gives fairly comprehensive information in Polish and English.

re: Poland 1950 Groszy overprint (hand stamp)

I just bought this lot on E-Bay for less than $10. I have all of the base stamps and I'm sure some of the stamps probably have fake overprints but I thought it was an interesting lot at a fair price! Since I bought the lot I hope it is OK to use the image.

I'm not really sure how to put these in my Minkus album - on a separate page or next to the base stamp.
Edit: I just got the lot and, as I thought, I have all the base stamps. I left them as they were, in the black unit, and mounted it exactly as it is on the back of one of my Minkus pages in the 1950 time period - it looks great but it really has very little monetary value, which matters very little to me. It's a great addition to Poland!!

Hi Harvey,

re: Poland 1950 Groszy overprint (hand stamp)

I was very happy with the price - $8.50 + $5 (shipping). My Poland cut off is 1985 and my collection is really filling in lately. I'm not really a fan of souvenir sheets but since my album shows them I keep my eyes open and have been finding the later ones quite cheaply on E-Bay - the older ones are more of a challenge. My main gap now is the early overprints, most of which are forgeries anyway. As I just mentioned in another thread I would love to find a legitimate copy of #1. Just a dream, I think! I know there are a few Poland collectors out there, it makes a great collection, especially combined with Russia and it's many fake overprints as well!

All overprints are brutal forgeries - without real type and ON PREVIOUSLY USED BY POST STAMPS (IN YEARS 1947-1949) - BEFORE REFORM! It's just waste paper.

re: Poland 1950 Groszy overprint (hand stamp)

I agree that there are some forgeries here, but just because the stamp was before 1950 doesn't automatically make it a forgery because they hand stamped any stamps they had in inventory. They are not overprints, they were hand stamped. I don't consider myself an expert, obviously you are, but I like the look of the selection and that's all that really matters. Even fakes are worth something! I think your condemnation was a bit short, you make me sound like an idiot because I bought something you don't like. You even sent me this as a personal message, a bit much and not appreciated. In the future please tone it down a bit.
To quote Scott's: The surcharge was applied to most of Poland's 1946-1950 issues. They also say counterfeits exist. I suggest that people who are going to make statements at least make an attempt to get their facts straight. Not that it really matters that much to me. I think the stamps have an appeal, and since it is my collection, that's all that really matters! 'nuff said!Angel
