I shall be starting a new collection for the postage stamps of the Netherlands for 1852 through 1948 as Scott Specialty Album pages for Part I have come into my hands. I have created a want list for the country's stamps from the album and my collection as of this writing stands at 0 of 683 issues. It should be an interesting journey!

re: Netherlands - Land of Windmills and Dikes

I have made some initial bids on some small collections of items on eBay and received a couple of offers through Stamporama for stamps so this definitely looks like it is going to be fun. I hope to find at least a few stamps through some older International albums that I still have that served as feeders to my main International 1840-1963 collection where there may be some remainders available. Once the eBay bids settle I will start review of the available mint stamps through Stamporama sources. I will need to look into whether I can locate the Part 2 pages for the Netherlands at an attractive price as well.

I have been reading internet sources about the Netherlands to learn more about its history as well as checking out Antonius Ra's online collection as I seek to gain more familiarity with the country. I still remember Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates, a book published in 1865, from a childhood book read which is most of what I know about the Netherlands so this should represent quite a springboard for learning.

ah... Hans Brinker. Every American who visits the Netherlands expects that we all know the book, but it is "import folklore". The story was written by an American and it is an imaginary Netherlands that is described in it. Not many Dutch people would recognize much of it, although the story of the boy who put his finger in the dike has become iconic.

If you want a colourful guide to the Netherlands with everything from high culture to sports (football*! speed skating! cycling!), history and what excites us Dutch, read Ben Coates' 'Why The Dutch Are Different'. Written like only an Englishman can, but he knows what he is talking about.

As far as the stamps are concerned: your part 1 will be the most difficult, everything after say 1960 is available in large numbers, except for a few stamps like the Amphilex 1967 sheets and singles. In the 21st century the Dutch postal service went completely bonkers - too many stamps that one hardly sees on mail, all in sheets of 10 (not available as single stamps) and there is the scourge of the personal stamps - I hate these with a passion. So used eurovalue commems are relatively rare. I cut off my own Netherlands collection at the year 2001.

* Football as in association football, the most popular sport in the world. Not the strange game with the egg shaped ball and men in armour we call American football. Big Grin

Yes, korfbal... it is a unique sport in many aspects. The only teamsport I know of that has mixed teams: men and women together in one team. It is also the only sport in which the world cup final can be predicted with 99.9% certainty: it will be the Netherlands against Belgium, and most of the time the Dutch will win. As a matter of fact, the Netherlands won all titles except for 1, which went to Belgium, with the Netherlands second.
Not that surprising when you think of it, the sport only caught on in these two countries and even there it still is a small sport. Only the highlights from the cup final will be shown on tv. I cannot remember when I last saw korfbal on television. So I do not think korfbal is on the same level as for instance speed skating (another sport that is only taken seriously in the Netherlands). Almost all skating championships are live on tv, in 6 hours marathon broadcasts.

By the way, golf was also invented by the Dutch. Or at least, that's what we like to think here. We also claim Laurens Janszoon Coster, not Johannes Gutenberg, was the true inventor of bookprinting, although it is now grudgingly accepted this might not be entirely true.

I will definitely look for the Ben Coates' book as a more accurate portrayal. So far I am only interested in the Part 1 stamps for 1852-1948 but if the Part 2 pages were to become available I would probably expand the collection.

I did get one lot of the three I bid on from eBay but I suspect will not succeed on the others. I found one mint stamp for the album in one of the International albums which had remainders in it that I checked so now have 1 of 683 issues in the album! This one is a light blue 1/2 cent postage due stamp from the period 1912-21, Scott # J44. Noted that the dates of issue information for the postage due stamps are different in the Scott Catalog, the Scott International, and the Scott Specialty albums!

Found another stamp in a second International remainders album, this one is an air mail stamp, Scott C11 from 1938 so at 2 of 683 stamps.

I will add pictures to the posts later. Fortunately the album pages are three hole punched and I am using a Scott three ring binder for the album. The album pages, also, cover the Netherlands Indies, Netherlands Antilles, and Surinam so they will be an option in the future for expansion. The original pages package was still shrink wrapped and is strikingly clean.

Jan Simon said, "Yes, korfbal... it is a unique sport in many aspects. The only teamsport I know of that has mixed teams: men and women together in one team."

Nope, not unique. An apparently growing sport here in Canada and the U.S. is Ultimate Frisbee, which combines the skills of soccer (football), American/Canadian football, basketball, and maybe even ballet! The primary goal is to throw a frisbee to a member of your team who is in the end-zone without a member of the other team intercepting it. Teams are made up of both men and women. No contact or foul language is allowed. There are a couple of professional leagues, but most teams are amateur and very social, with lots of time in pubs following the games. If one team is short of players, players from the opposing team are loaned to them. How's that for collaboration?!

Our son, Paul, has played Ultimate Frisbee for the last dozen years, although age is creeping up on him (he was the oldest player on his team last year) and he's decided to call it quits despite his love for the sport, which can result in serious injuries, mostly from falling. Some photos of Paul in Ultimate action:

re: Netherlands - Land of Windmills and Dikes

Regarding how I start a new collection: I will often either have some existing stamps through remainders from some International album feeders that I have purchased in the past or the new album/pages may come with some existing stamps as a base or I have purchased a base collection which I use in starting the new album.

In two cases, I started the collections from essentially nothing in terms of existing stamps or initial collections. One was the Finland collection and the other is this Netherlands collection. The Finland collection is now down to 11 missing stamps, Scott #'s 1, 11, 20-24, 30, and 36 plus two of the Aunus issues: N7 and N8. There are spaces for four other issues in the album: Scott #'s 3B, 2C, 14, and 15 but these items are either somewhat questionable (and lack mint pricing) plus numbers 14 and 15 are no longer listed in the Scott catalog although spaces exist in my Scott Hingeless album.

My collections for USA, Canada, France, Japan, and Great Britain were based on fairly small starter collections purchased at stamp shows with the exception of Great Britain which started from a stockbook of later mint issues from eBay. The starter collections typically had from 10% to 20% of the required stamps for the Scott pages on which the albums are based.

My International 1840-1963 collection started as a Minkus Supreme Global collection that I purchased on eBay in 2005 which contained just over 14,000 total stamps and which contributed 9,700 stamps to my collection which now has 31,616 stamps as of my last additions. The remaining stamps covered either time periods beyond my International album time frame, included issues which are not included in my International album pages, or were duplicated on pages which had been added to the Minkus albums. Eventually I discovered that several countries were not present in the Minkus page set and some pages were duplicated as the prior owner had added some items from other Minkus page sets as the albums grew over time.

re: Netherlands - Land of Windmills and Dikes

Added two pictures to the original posts indicating the first items in the album.

Also, acquired a number of items from a local stamp dealer today by going through his red boxed items to bring me to 100 of 683 stamps in the album. He had recently bought a fairly large collection that I went through fourteen paper boxes filled with 3-ring binders looking for Netherlands stamps. My result was one manila stock page filled with some off paper used stamps so that was a bit disappointing. Happy The red box search did make up for it thankfully. I did take note of some items that should give me some additions for the International album.

New stamps added were Scott #'s 65, 68, 87, 89, 93, 94a, 150, 165, 166, 168, 169, 170, 171, 204, 205, 245-261, 278, 302-303, 304-305, B37-40, B41-3, B103-107, B123-8, B134-8, B139-43, B149-53, B154-8, B159-63, B164-9, B170-4, B175-9, C4-5, and O6.

I will add pictures once I get a chance to scan the new acquisitions. Also, I won a small counter book with stamps from the Netherlands on eBay and am working on another acquisition of some selected stamps from a Stamporama member so starting strong at this point.

My wife and I collected certain countries but also kept a small world collection by using the first 3 volumes of Scott's International for world stuff we came across. I ended up with good starter collections of several countries. Over the last few years I expanded these countries into actual collections - it seemed like the way to go!

re: Netherlands - Land of Windmills and Dikes

Added 60 new stamps to bring me to 160 of 683 stamps in the album.

New stamps added are Scott #'s B6-8, B9-11, B12-15, B17 B21-24, B33, B36, B44, B58, B59, B70, B72, B86-89, B90-93, B94-97, B98-102, B108-112, B113-117, B129-133, B144-145, and B199-202. Stamps were acquired through eBay and were part of a Netherlands dealer counter book on which I was the successful bidder. The semi-postal section of the album is starting to look very respectable with every page but one having at least one complete set on it (that page has four singles but no complete set).

You are doing quite well! I see you chose to collect mint. That can be a challenge for the older issues, the real classics, which have really high c.v. for mnh.

Do you also plan to collect the syncopated perforation varieties ("roltandingen")? Many tend to ignore these, but the real rarities can be found in this section, including some of the most expensive Dutch stamps.

Keep posting your updates, it is nice to see your progress.

Stamp was found in a Netherlands album shared by a fellow collector which contained some duplicates. Considering that the album had quite a few stamps in it it was quite amazing that there was only one mint stamp that I did not have in my album.

New stamp was Scott #89.

Added 155 stamps to bring me to 319 of 683 stamps for the album.

New stamps were acquired from a local collector's duplicate album and a Stamporama member who provided some stamps from a want list as well as a small number of items from eBay offers. Now have at least one stamp on every page of the regular issues, semi-postals, and air mail pages.

In addition I have added a significant number of issues for the Netherlands to my International 1840-1963 based collection and to an International Junior 1930 edition album.

New stamps were Scott #'s 226 through 243. Stamps were acquired through eBay. The stamps completed a page in the album as well. A few other stamps had been acquired recently as well but apparently I failed to note them. Sad They almost have to be semi-postals and I need to post scans for semi-postals anyway so will do some scanning later to bring them up to date.

Also, I won a small counter book with stamps from the Netherlands on eBay and am working on another acquisition of some selected stamps from a Stamporama member so starting strong at this point.

re: Netherlands - Land of Windmills and Dikes

Starting from an existing collection seems to be the default method for launching into a new area.

I enjoyed reading your posts on the progress of your Finland collection. Thanks for sharing the story of the journey.

re: Netherlands - Land of Windmills and Dikes

The semi-postal section of the album is starting to look very respectable with every page but one having at least one complete set on it (that page has four singles but no complete set).

re: Netherlands - Land of Windmills and Dikes

You are doing quite well! I see you chose to collect mint. That can be a challenge for the older issues, the real classics, which have really high c.v. for mnh.

Do you also plan to collect the syncopated perforation varieties ("roltandingen")? Many tend to ignore these, but the real rarities can be found in this section, including some of the most expensive Dutch stamps.

Keep posting your updates, it is nice to see your progress.

re: Netherlands - Land of Windmills and Dikes

Added three new stamps to bring me to 163 of 683 stamps in the album.

New stamps are Scott #'s 277, 262, and 268. Stamps were located in an old Scott Grand Award album that I checked for possible additions.

re: Netherlands - Land of Windmills and Dikes

Added 1 new stamp to bring me to 164 of 683 stamps for the album.

Stamp was found in a Netherlands album shared by a fellow collector which contained some duplicates. Considering that the album had quite a few stamps in it it was quite amazing that there was only one mint stamp that I did not have in my album.

New stamp was Scott #89.

re: Netherlands - Land of Windmills and Dikes

Added 155 stamps to bring me to 319 of 683 stamps for the album.

New stamps were acquired from a local collector's duplicate album and a Stamporama member who provided some stamps from a want list as well as a small number of items from eBay offers. Now have at least one stamp on every page of the regular issues, semi-postals, and air mail pages.

In addition I have added a significant number of issues for the Netherlands to my International 1840-1963 based collection and to an International Junior 1930 edition album.

re: Netherlands - Land of Windmills and Dikes

Added 18 new stamps to bring me to 354 of 683 stamps for the album.
