Within my hobbies, I'm working on model cars and organizing my stamp collection. I'm trying not to spend a lot of money because I have none coming in. But I have enough from both hobbies to keep me occupied for a long time!
One of those tasks is scanning all the covers in my New Jersey cover collection. I've wanted to create a website for these. I even own www.thenewjerseyproject.com, which currently just points at my model car club's show site.
Since I purchased the domain, and sometimes for posting on this site, I've scanned the covers I've obtained in the past few years. But the majority of the old collection was never scanned. So now I have finished this task up through the letter "N".
Here's a few random pages I found the raw scans still sitting on my computer...
This is just a glimpse into my album. For the formal scans, I've cropped each cover out and have it sitting by itself. All told there are 74 different covers for the letter N.
And for those who like stats.. I now have 955 of the possible 2212 cancels for a completion of 43.2%. Adding a cover just now took it from 43.17% to 43.22% so it's slow going!
And it's gotten exponentially harder to find covers. There are ones I see available at dealers and on eBay I need, but priced a bit to a lot more than I wish to pay. And as Murphy's Law dictates, when I have paid a lot for a cover, one comes along later for a pittance!
I don't ever expect to complete this collection. I'm sure that there aren't any examples at all of some offices or eras, especially those that were open for a short time. At first I didn't even list post offices that only existed before 1875, but then I started finding a few so I updated my database to include every office and variety that has existed since 1776.
And sometimes what appears to be very rare can suddenly appear as people find a string of old correspondence. For instance the "Alfred Vail Rural Station" in Eatontown existed between 1943 and 1958, only 15 years. I found one on eBay, an odd size greeting card envelope. I queried the dealer and he had two more from the same chain of correspondence! Someone had saved their old greeting cards! So you never know. And that adds to the fun of it all!

Hey Tom.
I like the first cover especially - that's my birthday! (The day, albeit many years before).
I always hated Nixon, especially after the Kent State Massacre (NOT A POLITICAL STATEMENT - PLEASE DON'T ANYONE RESPOND)
But, if you ever decide to sell that one, let me know!

I loke the way you've laid-out your postmark collection. The map is a nice touch.
I do a similar way with my postmarks of Netherlands Indies-Indonesia.

Thank you guys! And my collection is an ever changing target. Just this morning I was alerted to a postmark that was not listed in any of the sources I built my list upon!
During WWII the New Jersey coast was alive with US military training efforts. So I've added "Navy 11030 Branch" to my list. I don't know the years in operation just yet. I didn't buy it because the dealer wanted much more than I wish to pay, and since this cover is philatelic in nature, I'm sure I'll find one now that I know to look for it!
And here's a few covers that have shown up in my mail this week:
Auburn was in Salem County from 1862 until 1933, for a total of 71 years, but that ended 88 years ago. Not a tourist destination, there wouldn't be an abundance of postcards mailed from there like Atlantic City or Wildwood, but people did send Christmas cards! And this one got saved all these years. So now we add Auburn to towns in our collection for less than $5 delivered.
Fish House was in Camden county for 36 years, from 1886 to 1924. Again we have a postcard used for communication. The efficiency of the postal service was just as fast as today in 1911. The card took one day to arrive in Pennsylvania! This one came from one of the dealers I follow on eBay for just a few dollars. And while it's become slow going, I'm still adding covers to the collection when I can. That's two for the month!
And as I look at a zillion covers, I do find some nice upgrades. Here is a super Highlands, NJ cover from the Monmouth County Historical Society. It's funny to think that there was a historical society some 118 years ago, especially since so much has happened since! A quick look reveals that the society was founded in 1898 so it was only 4 years old here!
Highlands and Atlantic Highlands are important since the highest point on the Eastern Seaboard is here. The famous Twin Lights are high on that point. Also covered here is Sandy Hook, which contains Fort Hancock and today, Gateway National Park. The historic Lighthouse at Sandy Hook lit the entrance to New York Harbor.
I bought this one for a few dollars, mainly because I am from Monmouth County, and because it was so cool. That emblem may just make it onto one of my model trucks someday! As I added this cover to my album I reviewed the additional Highlands cover from the 1970s...
And I'll keep the Sandy Hook Lighthouse cover because of it's historic nature. I like the pictorial cancel and that's one of my own ODDITY covers too!

And shortly after my last post, I received a package from Roy and Debbie at Buck A Cover! with these two beauties for the New Jersey collection!
Morris Plains is one of those towns I didn't believe I didn't already have! The post office was established in 1876 and is still in existence today. This 1888 cover has a nice postal strike and contained an 8 page love letter! Priceless and timeless!
Heislerville is in Cumberland County and was founded in 1875. The post office still exists today, in fact I visited there in 2018 on one of my postal jaunts. Still, when I see a nice cover like this one at a reasonable price, I consider an upgrade. Upon looking at my album, there was an extra space on the Heislerville page, so I saw no need to eliminate the newer cover, and both now represent that town!
The collection now stands at 958 towns and varieties of a total of 2213 for 43.29% completion. So this week we have added 3 examples and discovered one new variety taking the total of known postmarks from 2212 to 2213.
