When I first looked at these it seemed easy: the top row is "red" the bottom row "claret". But, of course, that is not the choice available: one is "scarlet" and one is "carmine".
So I went to an online colour chart and - of course - neither colour chip is a really good match (to my eye). But the top row I would describe as a "light carmine" and the bottom row a "light scarlet-brown".
So for those who aren't as clueless as me on colours...would you agree the top row is "carmine" and the bottom row "scarlet"?
I found an envelope full of these so want to make sure I get it right as the CV differences are significant.

The only thing worse than figuring out US stamp's color shades is trying to tell if a stamp is single line USPS watermark or no watermark at all. The 10 cent could be carmine (J74, perf 11), dull carmine (J84, perf 11 by 10 1/2) or scarlet ( J84a, perf 11 by 10 1/2). The $1 could be carmine (J77, Perf 11), scarlet (J77a, perf 11) or scarlet ( J87, perf 10 1/2 by 11). If you're real lucky with the perfs you might be able to nail it down. Otherwise, you're right, you have to tell the difference between carmine and scarlet and that's a a crap shoot. So, good luck with that. My color guide makes Scarlett (Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn) look a bit darker and that's the way I have them in my album. So, to make a long story short, I think you have them labeled properly. But I would still check the perfs in case you luck out!

Thanks for un-complicating my life somewhat Joe! I didn't know there was also a "dull carmine" shade; but I did notice there was another shade variation throughout - I just assumed that was a result of some fading...so back to the drawing board!
Checking the perfs will now be my next step. At least there are only six denominations where there would be a significant CV bump, so that should cut down on my time consumption considerably.

My Liberty album only showed the two basic series - J69 - J78 (carmine, P11 ) and J79 - J87 ( Dull carmine except for for last one which is scarlet, P11 by 10 1/2) so all I worried about was the perforations. I probably will never get into the a's and will keep that part of the collection as simple as possible. Stamps can fade or oxidize over time so unless I really have to I try to avoid awkward color shades. Of course, with early US it is usually impossible to avoid!! Good luck with your stamps, it'll be tricky!
