There are two listed precancells for US Airmail issues but I have a third one with similar looking Bureau type precancel. Here is an image you can view:

The 10c - 50 Star Runway is not listed in Scott US Specialized as precanceled.
Could someone please confirm with the US Precancel catalog whether this was a genuine precancel. The 11c does have a note listing the two types of precacels "D.C." and 'DC".
Are there any other Airmail issues with Bureau precancel.

re: US Airmail Precancels

My 1997 Bureau Precancel Catalog does not list the 10 cent stamp. Looking at the Town & Type catalog it may be one of two types of precancel.

812 - 3mm Block Caps and 7-8mm line spacing - 1997 value is $0.50
821 - 2.5mm Block Caps and 8-9mm line spacing - 1997 value is $0.25

Catalog does not list what stamps the precancel exists on.

Good luck,
Bob

re: US Airmail Precancels

Thanks Bob, here is some additional info I got at other sites from helpful friends:
The 10c stamp is not a bureau precancel, but rather a type 821. This is a vinyl handstamp. You can find many airmail stamps precanceled by non-bureau precancel devices (usually the early issues) but only 3 different airmails are listed in the bureau catalog:
C78 - Washington DC, Style 71 ("D.C")
C78 - Washington DC, Style 81 ("DC")
C79 - Washington DC, Style 81 ("DC")

Here's more:
According to the Washington Star (May 23, 1971) the 10c Runway precancels were made available to members of Congress to use on May 3, 1971. The domestic airmail rate increased to 11c on May 16 -- less than two weeks later.

Ain't there some really wonderful and helpful collectors around....all I did was post a query and got immediate answers!
To other collectors reading this.........if you have doubts just go ahead and ask, even if it sounds as silly as Why it is ? or How does this ?
or What is.....?

re: US Airmail Precancels

I submitted a letter to my Congressman and asked if it was possible to get a Plate Block of the then current C79 ( as used by Congress ). Surprisingly I received an entire sheet with notification they were not to be used for mailing, only collecting ... so I collected! I also have the C78 Pre-cancel but not in plate block. Now I wish I had the C78 or type 821 ... Thanks for this information guys. Perry
