I'm offended as a member and secretary of Stamporama that you ask such a question. If you want dealers and auctioneers then PLEASE use the yellow pages or the Internet. Stamporama has an ongoing and outstanding auction, I think none exceed it ....

I also like our auction. If it was the only way to add to my collection, however, it would be slow going at times. So, I understand why you are asking, kmoorhead.
I occasionally found interesting items on ebay's international pages, i.e., ebay.fr or ebay.de etc. Also some goodies can be found on delcampe's various international websites (a lot of overpriced junk on these websites, too, though). The language barrier is a problem, no doubts. Also paying for the item can be problematic if paypal is not accepted. On the upside, you may be able to find mispriced items that would not go undetected on ebay.com. So you may try those websites, subject to my general caveat below.
Personally, I don't like buying individual stamps from any online auction. Particularly, if it comes to pre-war VF MNH, one really would want to make sure that what one is getting is truely "MNH" and also "VF". Almost all individual stamps I bought online have not been in the condition that I really had expected them to be.
If it is a lot or collection, with a low average price per stamp -- who cares if there are some faulty. It is to be expected. If we talk individual and better stamps, based on my experiences, I have had it with ebay. I am almost exclusively buying covers now and the problems are not as bad with those. But individual stamps I would now probably only want to buy on an approval basis from reputable sellers.

I stubbed my toe, stepped on the cat, can't find my keys, and well it's just darn hot here in Southern California, so excuse my rudeness. However, I thought this was discussed before about referring other websites ... perhaps it's just my lack of memory and "peeved" attitude this morning that set me off .... If I want a stamp I just type it into the computer and it tells me everywhere they are to be bought, er, at a price ..... Perry

Well, um, yes, there are a few auctions out there that "exceed" the Stamporama auction. The Stamporama auction is excellent for beginning and general collectors, and intermediate collectors will occasionally find good buys. But specialists who have been at it for any length of time will find slim pickings. We pretty much have to rely on established commercial dealers.
I would like to recommend Weeda Stamps, a small internet auction company based in Victoria, British Columbia. I know owners Beverly Fox and Andrew Blanchard personally, and can vouch for their integrity. They emphasize Canadian stamps and postal history in their bi-weekly auctions, and often have excellent U.S. and worldwide material.
I don't think that Stamporama members need to fear mentioning auctions other than our own; all stamp dealers need our support if our hobby is to thrive. In addition, Stamporama dealers would be the first to admit they simply do not have the time, interest, or resources to supply all members with the material they need.

What a great resource of auction sites you have provided. I'll be trying out some of these references.
A comment on Arno's post above about buying individual stamps from a dealer, I found Poppe Stamps to be very accurate on their communication of quality. I found a particular stamp that I'd been searching for on there site and purchased it. They wrote to me saying that the particular stamp that I had purchase had a crease in it and asked if I still wanted to buy the stamp, giving me an out on the deal. I thought that was really good service. The only thing about Poppe Stamps is that they are in the Philippines and postage takes several weeks.

I have always thought and used this message board as a source for philatelic information. If one would look through the search device at the left of this page and put in any item for philatleic information, you would see volumes of fine material that would enhance and empower your collecting knowledge. I would hope that the message board would remain so.

When Doug was compiling the list of philatelic auction websites he sought help from collectors at another Stamps related website to help him put it together - I also provided a few of the above links, his only condition was that the site has to be authentic & reliable with good philatelic material. Stamporama auction link is also there -this auction links-list helped many to enhance their collections including myself but when it comes to integrity of sellers/buyers - SOR is there at the top.

In general I agree with you, Joel. But I did an extensive Google search for these auctions and the good ones are VERY difficult to isolate. Many auctions surface, but few have enough philatelic material to justify even looking. This list is the result of many many people compiling their shared information. If that isn't valuable enough to share with fellow collectors, then I'm not sure what is! After all, collecting isn't primarily about discussing the items you collect, it is about ACQUIRING. You can't graduate to studying the material if you don't have anything to study! And how do people build exhibition quality collections if they don't have sources for finding elusive material? Yes, blatant advertising for specific sources should be banned from this site, but discussions about generic methods for finding items should be greatly encouraged.

I have found that the best auctions are retail stores (like Weeda in Vancouver) who auction small lots of really nice stamps every couple of weeks. Do any of you know of places like these?

Theresa, If you are looking for elusive material to create an exhibition quality collection, in my opinion, you should be looking for that type of material from want list submitted to dealers that specialize in that type of material. The philatelic media has many dealers that supply esoteric material of all sorts and stripes. If I were looking for a particular piece of material, and I have many times, I would look on the internet auctions, but I prefer dealing with a reputable dealer of that material. You may pay a premium, but you get what you pay for and a reputable dealer will stand behind product if you are not satisfied.
For me collecting is not about acquiring an item, but what that item will tell me about history. It is the history and the travels of that stamp or cover that talks to me and enhances my pleasure and knowledge. If you would read some to the articles that are on the Stamporama website, you would see how other collectors have viewed their acquisitions.

Yes, but the point is - WHERE did the Stamporama members get the acquisitions that they wrote about?
I'm sure many of us agree that one of the best parts of stamp collecting is the thrill of learning a about a unique moment in history through the travels of a bit of correspondence. But the discussion thread was about where to find those treasures. Isn't that how the whole process begins?
Please share more of your tips - how did you find some of your favorites?
Anyone else have any helpful "scavenger hunt" tips? Let's hear 'em!

i just spent a little while on Roy's Buck A Cover (our sponsor) site and found quite a few interesting covers, mostly airmail special delivery covers and a couple of tied seals, including one Boys Town used as postage and tied accordingly.

Theresa, I had been collecting for a good while before I purchased my first computer. That was 11 eleven years ago. I acquired my stamps and covers by going to stamp shows and bourses as well as subscribing to several different stamp publications. Currently, I have 5 different stamp periodicals that I am receiving. I will pare down that number of subscriptions in the near future. I do scour the advertisements for the type of material I want. Once I find a dealer or collector that is selling material I am interested in, I develop a relationship with that indvidual and many times I receive material that the dealer has obtained for me. Yes I do put in price parameters. Some items do require deep pockets. I am not a deep pockets person. Like i said earlier, I frequent shows locally and maintain an arrangement with a dealer that I have purchased from. The advent of the internet and its possibilities is a new adjunct to stamp collecting for me and I have purchased items from time to time from internet sales. But it is not nor will it be my sole source of purchases.

Weeda Stamps Inc. is no longer in Vancouver, and is no longer a walk-in brick-and-mortar store. Owners Beverly Fox and Andrew Blanchard moved to Victoria, on Vancouver Island, two or three years ago, and now operate as an on-line auction only (although you can arrange to visit their home on philatelic business at any time.)

i'm morphing the topic ever so slightly, bringing it back to our auction because i found one of those lots that only an Aussie could create: CREATURES OF THE SLIME. http://www.stamporama.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.pl?category=bc&item=1248761305. Or as we like to say: from the slime to the ridiculous. I especially like the crawling garlic, just keep it away from that Canadian set with Dracula.
Of course, for you smokers out there, there's a beautiful mint offering from Fiume: http://www.stamporama.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.pl?category=europew&item=1249148423. it's not badly centered, and offered at 10 percent of CV. It's a dead country with a short, conservative stamp-issuing policy, so it's easily completed. And at 10% CV, this is a good place to start.
I featured http://www.stamporama.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.pl?category=cancels&item=1248543513 once before, so i guess no one picked up on it; this time, some one has (one of our most accomplished cancel collectors, incidentally, so if you don't trust me, well...). take a look at 10c a cover for slogan cancels killing Canadian commemoratives. And, if you don't bid, at least say that 10 times fast.

My Schnauzers asked me to tell you that they're from the pacifist branch of the Schnauzer family. The standards and minis were bred as ratters and stable dogs. The Giants are the military muscle and also awesome police dogs.

I can also highly recommend FvHstamps.com for weekly "bidboard" style auctions. Most/all of the material is from collectors rather than Frank (the store owner). Frank also sells a ton of supplies (at good discounts) and is very dependable and if anything underdescribes the lots. I've actually got better deals off the bidboard there than from some of the "major" Canadian auction houses. Nice store to visit too, as it is near Gastown in central Vancouver and packed full of stamps and related stuff.

p.s. I believe Weeda stamps bidboard (which is also very good, and perhaps a little better laid out online than FvH - alphabetical ordering of lots for instance)recently moved to Victoria from Vancouver. (Just an aside as it wouldn't matter to anyone not in BC.)

Hi Theresa,
What a great resource of auction sites you have provided. I'll be trying out some of these references.
A comment on Arno's post above about buying individual stamps from a dealer, I found Poppe Stamps to be very accurate on their communication of quality. I found a particular stamp that I'd been searching for on there site and purchased it. They wrote to me saying that the particular stamp that I had purchase had a crease in it and asked if I still wanted to buy the stamp, giving me an out on the deal. I thought that was really good service. The only thing about Poppe Stamps is that they are in the Philippines and postage takes several weeks.

I have always thought and used this message board as a source for philatelic information. If one would look through the search device at the left of this page and put in any item for philatleic information, you would see volumes of fine material that would enhance and empower your collecting knowledge. I would hope that the message board would remain so.

When Doug was compiling the list of philatelic auction websites he sought help from collectors at another Stamps related website to help him put it together - I also provided a few of the above links, his only condition was that the site has to be authentic & reliable with good philatelic material. Stamporama auction link is also there -this auction links-list helped many to enhance their collections including myself but when it comes to integrity of sellers/buyers - SOR is there at the top.

In general I agree with you, Joel. But I did an extensive Google search for these auctions and the good ones are VERY difficult to isolate. Many auctions surface, but few have enough philatelic material to justify even looking. This list is the result of many many people compiling their shared information. If that isn't valuable enough to share with fellow collectors, then I'm not sure what is! After all, collecting isn't primarily about discussing the items you collect, it is about ACQUIRING. You can't graduate to studying the material if you don't have anything to study! And how do people build exhibition quality collections if they don't have sources for finding elusive material? Yes, blatant advertising for specific sources should be banned from this site, but discussions about generic methods for finding items should be greatly encouraged.

Theresa, If you are looking for elusive material to create an exhibition quality collection, in my opinion, you should be looking for that type of material from want list submitted to dealers that specialize in that type of material. The philatelic media has many dealers that supply esoteric material of all sorts and stripes. If I were looking for a particular piece of material, and I have many times, I would look on the internet auctions, but I prefer dealing with a reputable dealer of that material. You may pay a premium, but you get what you pay for and a reputable dealer will stand behind product if you are not satisfied.
For me collecting is not about acquiring an item, but what that item will tell me about history. It is the history and the travels of that stamp or cover that talks to me and enhances my pleasure and knowledge. If you would read some to the articles that are on the Stamporama website, you would see how other collectors have viewed their acquisitions.

Yes, but the point is - WHERE did the Stamporama members get the acquisitions that they wrote about?
I'm sure many of us agree that one of the best parts of stamp collecting is the thrill of learning a about a unique moment in history through the travels of a bit of correspondence. But the discussion thread was about where to find those treasures. Isn't that how the whole process begins?
Please share more of your tips - how did you find some of your favorites?
Anyone else have any helpful "scavenger hunt" tips? Let's hear 'em!

Theresa, I had been collecting for a good while before I purchased my first computer. That was 11 eleven years ago. I acquired my stamps and covers by going to stamp shows and bourses as well as subscribing to several different stamp publications. Currently, I have 5 different stamp periodicals that I am receiving. I will pare down that number of subscriptions in the near future. I do scour the advertisements for the type of material I want. Once I find a dealer or collector that is selling material I am interested in, I develop a relationship with that indvidual and many times I receive material that the dealer has obtained for me. Yes I do put in price parameters. Some items do require deep pockets. I am not a deep pockets person. Like i said earlier, I frequent shows locally and maintain an arrangement with a dealer that I have purchased from. The advent of the internet and its possibilities is a new adjunct to stamp collecting for me and I have purchased items from time to time from internet sales. But it is not nor will it be my sole source of purchases.

Weeda Stamps Inc. is no longer in Vancouver, and is no longer a walk-in brick-and-mortar store. Owners Beverly Fox and Andrew Blanchard moved to Victoria, on Vancouver Island, two or three years ago, and now operate as an on-line auction only (although you can arrange to visit their home on philatelic business at any time.)

It's a dead country with a short, conservative stamp-issuing policy, so it's easily completed. And at 10% CV, this is a good place to start.

My Schnauzers asked me to tell you that they're from the pacifist branch of the Schnauzer family. The standards and minis were bred as ratters and stable dogs. The Giants are the military muscle and also awesome police dogs.

I can also highly recommend FvHstamps.com for weekly "bidboard" style auctions. Most/all of the material is from collectors rather than Frank (the store owner). Frank also sells a ton of supplies (at good discounts) and is very dependable and if anything underdescribes the lots. I've actually got better deals off the bidboard there than from some of the "major" Canadian auction houses. Nice store to visit too, as it is near Gastown in central Vancouver and packed full of stamps and related stuff.

p.s. I believe Weeda stamps bidboard (which is also very good, and perhaps a little better laid out online than FvH - alphabetical ordering of lots for instance)recently moved to Victoria from Vancouver. (Just an aside as it wouldn't matter to anyone not in BC.)
