I only use Showgard mounts, albeit, sometimes the mount is more expensive than the stamp. All my mint, cancel, plate blocks, & line pairs are protected by these hinges. Of course they leave no mark on the stamp. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with this company but they are, to me, the best! Perry
Since I use very few hinges, because I rarely mount stamps for anything except exhibits, and then usually use mounts, this is not an area that concerns me personally. And I have several packets of Dennison hinges.
Having said that, I simply don't worry about hinging common stamps. Many dealers don't even count common, minimum CV stamps in evaluating collections; ergo, it doesn't matter if they are hinged or not, or what kinds of hinges are used. If I need to mount a more valuable stamp, I just use mounts. And I normally use black mounts which provide a frame around a stamp, whether it's mint or used. (If a stamp has bad perfs, I'll avoid black mounts because of the way that emphasize perf faults.
As far as I know, Perry, there are no good hinges left anywhere in the Universe, unless some company on a planet orbiting a star in another galaxy, far far away has chanced upon a peelable gum formula. You could say that planet earth has become unhinged, in more ways than one...

I try to use mounts on higher value stamps & MNH.
min.val. common stuff I use hinges. However there
are cases where common stuff has shot up in value.
I have noticed a few years ago that many used Br.
Commonwealth stamps have increased significantly in value from min. value. Fortunately, I obtained most of those years ago when there were still good hinges.(P)
Bob; unhinged comment ; so true.
Actually there is a "removable" tape, called Poster Tape by Scotch. I mount all my stamps in Showgard mounts and adhere them in my self-printed pages with this tape. If for any reason I change the design of the page, didn't attach the stamp correctly, or whatever it is easily removed (no damage to the mount or stamp). After these stamps are attached to the page they are inserted into clear acetate page covers and this allows extra protection for each stamp. See sample:
What is the difference between Showgard and Scott mounts?
I'm rather partial to the Scott mounts myself. I think they give a nice presentation as well as the ability to easily take the stamp out of the mount, even when it is on the page.
Regards ... Tim
Showgard mounts also come with a black background, if so desired, but it requires the mounting square to be much larger to include the stamp or plate block. It was a space saving decision by me to originally use Showgard, albeit they are more expensive being that they come from Germany. Since I draw my own pages on 9 and half x 11" stock paper for use in the printer I required a smaller area for mounting ... thus less mounting space. Looking at Tim's example it would take thousands of pages to cover only a few years whereas it took hundreds of pages to document my US collection into the early 70's, which includes not just one stamp of each. I'm still designing and printing new pages all the time as I try to reach the modern era. Never used Scott mounts so I can not comment on them ... but if they only come in black, well, I would not be able to use them. Perry
Good point Perry. My collection is a lot smaller than yours.
Tim.
40 years ago 99% of all stamp hinges made were
excellent. What happened? Today's hinges are horrible. Can't find a decent hinge at all.
Can't afford 8-10 bucks a pack for the old
Dennison hinges.Anybody know of a good modern hinge? have heard that SG's hinges are good.
