Triggered by this success I wrote to the intelligent and business minds that are at the helm of the Postal Issues so I decided to write a letter to the Issuing Committee and to Linn's.
Among the different topics I touched is the total "infantilism" of the American public and the collectors of stamps (please see I didn't use the word Philatelist adjective).
I propossed that a "BEAVIS AND BUTHEAD" be honored by a group of different issues (with an error here/there together with the proliferation of different errors, etc.) I'm sure it will be a total success and the opening of an area of specialization in the development of these young american american chidren. Of course I know a lot of people be "offended" by this proposal to the "thinking heads at the highest levels of Postal Services", but I am sure they will stand in line for the first issue of a limitless of all the adventure of these youngsters. I know Robert Parkin is in favor of this idea, at least we are two that think that $ is the most importat issue at the moments we're living.

Luis and I agree to disagree on the appropriateness of the Simpson's stamps. I generally am not a USPS/CSAC basher but there is one thing about the program in recent years does bother me. I really don't like how the USPS is reusing images from stamps of previous years and just changing the denomination when the rate changes. For example, this year they reissued last years Celebrate stamp (which I think is 10 times more horid than the Simpson's stamp) and they are going to issue the same Eid stamp with a new denomination for at least the 3rd time that I can think of. Why can't they come up with a new design for the Eid stamp? After several re-issues of the Hanukkah and Kwanzaa stamp; they finally got a makeover last year. The worst offense of this was the reissue of the Greetings from America set of 50 that was originally issued at 34 cents right before a rate change then later in the year they re-issued the set again at 37 cents. They also have withdrawn a few issues out of the 2009 program. I would rather have them skip designs that were issued previous years than some new designs. These are the issues to me that are created just to suck the stamp collectors dry.

P.S. I'm not complaining about the minute production differences (perf sizes, Peak/Valley, Year Dates) created by different printers. To me, that is just part of philately. Many don't like those differences but I find that similar to the Washington/Franklin series.

I'm indifferent to the Simpsons' stamps. It seems about right, given USPS marketing efforts, and no less lame than mahogany speedboats. I can tell you that most of the stamps that i receive from collectors ARE the Simpsons. Incidentally, i think the Simpsons one of the most thoughtful, engaging shows on TV, funny at various levels. But I realize that it's personal taste.
Bob's observation about re-using these designs: celebrate, EID, Channakuh, Kwanza, purple heart, and even the Greetings stamps, hits the mark. Celebrations seldom include leftovers as the main course, and seems a slap (if unintended) at the various non-Christian groups being so pathetically honored. We're onto our second cycle (plus a full re-issue) of solar-lunar new year stamps, but all of Judeism and Islam have a stamp apiece.

Whether you like the Simpsons stamps or not you've got to admit that they have generated a lot of press, both in the philatelic world and beyond, and that's never a bad thing for stamp collecting in general.
I think the USPS has really focussed quite heavily on the US contribution to worldwide popular culture for the last couple of decades, so it stands to reason that TV shows would make the grade. And honestly, thinking from a US perspective (I'm Canadian) doesn't issuing stamps with US popular culture themes better reflect current US society than another flower, animal, or history-related stamp? (Think beyond your own personal interests - I think stamp collectors may have more sophisticated tastes - but we are by no means a majority of stamp buyers.)

One thing I notice when using the Simpsons Stamps... they are very difficult to get off the backing paper. I usually have to bend at least one perf to get them off. I'm on my second booklet. Has anyone else had this problem?

I've used at least 3-4 books of the Simpsons stamps and they all were hard to get off the backing - I really had to bend back and be careful.
For whats its worth, I really liked the Simpsons stamps - I'm a big fan of the show. At first I thought the designs for the stamps were too simple, and after seeing the stamps the simple designs are perfect for the size of a stamp.
I also bought a book of the Simpsons postal cards and mailed 15 of them to myself and my brothers to get some used sets which will probably be very hard to find. However, the postal machines pretty much mutilated all of them...

I like to save the backing of booklets when all the stamps are off but, especially since there are 4 different types for the Simpsons issue. Unfortunately, they are getting damaged (creased)when trying to remove the stamps.

i had trouble, too.
I think the Post Office, in an effort to make the collectors of used stamps feel better because they can't soak stamps off, made mint stamps more difficult too. it's sort of the Kurt Vonnegut solution.

i had trouble, too.
