I was recently in Anacortes Washington in an antique store looking at old postcards from 1900- about 1950. The stamps were mostly green and just a few varieties. Franklin, Washington and a commemorative in green. Some of the stamps looked dingy, but yet I was tempted. The post cards were mostly a dollar a piece. Should I have bought them to get the old stamps??

no, you shouldn't have bought them for the old stamps. There are a few rarities among the Green WFs, but not many, and one really needs to know what to look for. Mostly, these are minimum catalogue value stamps that you would be hard pressed to give away.

However, if you have an interest in post cards, or postal history, you might have considered it. I am not a post card collector per se, but there's a wealth of material that CAN be found there or on old envelopes, where the stamps are essentially worthless, but there are other philatelic or historical aspects that might find their ways into collections.

There's quite a bit of information on collecting covers in these pages, so take a gander IF you want to know more. But if you only wanted them for the stamps, I can virtually guarantee that you did the right thing twice: you didn't waste your money and you didn't destroy postal history for the next guy who might have wanted them.

NO NO NO! Never destroy a cover or a postcard just to obtain a common stamp! Of course, there would be exceptions, but if the cover or postcard seems to have the slightest attribute that might interest a collector, keep it intact!

re: Old post cards with old Stamps on them....

When I see those old cards at fleamarkets,or yard sales,Ilook for that something special that sets it aside as a common item.
It may be the card itself, the condition of the stamp, the cancelations which may be collectable( I know a few who collect flag cancels, others slogan and advertisements) dates of interest,or even the name or location of the sender/recepient. And advertisement card with "corner card", a company of interest.
There is a lot more to those cards/letters than just the stamp.
Of course, the question is ,do I buy and soak off those old, common stamps. Well, if there are none of the above mentioned atributes, yes,,, but a post card could sell for 15 cents, and a common stamp,1 cent each. If you're looking for possible resale of those cards.
And that $1.00 price tag is overinflated. If you could buy them at 10 or 15 cents each, you would break even, money wise.
On the other hand,if it has some personal something about it,to you, it would be priceless.
