The most recent Scott Stamp Monthly has the information for your 1st question in it. The 1st Scott Catalogue (actually price list) was printed in 1868. There were no "Scott Numbers" just descriptions. Scott Catalogue Numbers did not appear until the 48th edition in 1887. The current Scott Catalogue numbers came into being in 1940 (Alpha prefixes for Back of the Book Stamps). Not sure about the 2nd questions. I have a 1947 and that is one volume, so it has to be after that.

I'm quite sure that my first Scott catalogue, in one volume, was published in 1954.

Thanks guys. The reason I asked is because a few days ago I picked up a 1930 Scott catalogue at a yard sale. Prior to that my oldest Scott catalogues were a 1951 Vol. II and a 1954 US Specialized.
The 1930 catalogue is VERY different from the other two. (inside and out) It's 4 1/4" x 6 1/2", and 3" thick. (CHUNKY!) The numbering is crazy compared to now, and there are no complete images of US stamps. Also, back then Scott pub. was Scott Stamp & Coin Company.
Anyway, I'm still checking it out. I was curious to know just how chunky it got, before they broke it down into two volumes. -I can't believe it took another 10 years before they did something about the numbering... w-o-w!
Peace,
Doe
Another thing others may be interested is the US Parcel Post Rates (4th Class Mail) published in 1929.
I've tabled it (up to 25 lbs.) here:

Doe,
I believe there was a law that forbid showing images of US stamps for some years. Even stamp albums did not show images, they just had descriptions.

I've got my grandmother's 1920 Scott Catalog. It's a real treat to look through!
I have a 1961 Scott Combined World Wide volume which is composed of 2,368 pages of listings, 22 pages of introductory notes and 25 pages of addenda, indexes and advertising, over 2,400 pages all told.
And yes it is chunky. It is standard book size (About 9" x 6") as to length and width, but almost three inches thick. Fortunately the paper is very thin.
I should add that internally the 1961 edition is separated into two volumes; Volume One, USA and Possessions, Britain and Commonwealth, South and Central America; 966 pages and, Volume Two, The Rest of the World; 1402 pages all in one binding.
The oldest Scott that I have is 1904 when it was a smaller size, about 3½" x 5" and one inch thick. But it has over 600 pages even then.
Scott Specialized goes back to at least 1937. That is the oldest one I have here.

Hi All,
When was the first Scott US Specialized published? Also what was the last year the Scott catalogue was entirely contained in one volume?
Thanks,
Doe
