Yesterday I have acquired a US #C46, the 80c Hawaii issue on a registered cover mailed to Finland. I am yet to get my hands on the cover as it is in the mail but it looks fine to me, I have to check the dates and backstamp on this one. If it is in the rate period it would be a great addition but even if it is not it will surely plug a gap in my commercial usages of US airmails. Here is a preview of the image, I will post a better description and image when I receive it.

I've always loved this stamp. I have never been able to find a first day cover and it would be one of those where even if it was overpriced I would bid. Great acquisition Saleem. Perry

Seems to me,,I recall the reason for this 80c air mail stamp was for delivery of boxes of Orchids from Hawaii. Finding a box, package or (originaly attached) letter with invoice of said shipment were the most noted finds.
Seeing your cover showing other uses is a great find.
A FDC?? most previous and following issues(air),there were 2 to 3 hundred thousand 1st days produced,,for the C46--only 89,864 recorded. Yet,,surpriseingly they list for a mere $20 ,in scotts.

George that is terrific knowledge gained for the cover I am yet to recieve. Now I know where it originated and by whom - it doesn't look like philatelic usage so it would be added in my collection of commercial usages of US airmail stamps.
Getting the originally intented usages as mentioned by Tom are near impossible for me living here in India but I am keeping a watch for any such item if it comes up anywhere.

Didn't knoew about James McCusker's website till now - isn't SOR membership a wonderful way of delving into the hobby!

Now if anyone has a spare US #C117, New Sweden issue used on a commercial cover............

Perry,

Where do you see that on McCusker's? Every cover I have bought from them is the exact cover I have seen and has a specific lot number.

re: US # C46 on cover - recently acquired

Bob,

here's the text on McC's site:

Please be advised that the images within our Retail Shopping area are examples of what the cover looks like, and may not be the exact cover we ship. Many First Day Covers are virtually the same, and because a picture is worth a thousand words, we feel it is better to see something than nothing at all.

I was shocked to see this. Unless he's selling the mass-produced art craft covers or the like, one wonders what gives.

re: US # C46 on cover - recently acquired

It doent matter if he has several of the same exact covers,,one pic can cover them.
It's when one shows a pic. of a perfect, clean cover, and you recieve a dented, bent,or dirt smudged one, that looks nothing like the pic shown in the auction,or web page that makes a difference.
The statement David shows, indicates the latter may be possible.
But,,, Bob says there has never been a problem.
Maybe McC should consider rewording,or adding to that,, if not completely satisfied, return for full refund.

I've never run into that but I don't buy the mass produced items. They must be refering to the Artcraft, House of Farnum cachets, etc. There are only 5 C46 covers listed. I'm sure you are going to get what you see. This seems to be a descent issue as even the Artcraft cachet is over $10.00.

I havent had a problem with auction purchases, but did have a bad deal with an approval service for FDCs.
The ad showed pristine covers,.50c to 5.00,on approval.Well the first batch arrived, stuffed into a regular envelope,no protection what so ever, and the covers looked like they dug them out of a trash bin.Not one was without damage, stains, dirty, creased, and a mix of adressed and unadressed.Nothing like the ad,nothing like the pictures.
Needless to say, they were returned, with an unrepetable in public statement and that ended that fiasco.
A couple dollars postage both ways,,but a cheap lesson on,,let the buyer beware.
