Does anyone know the significance of Mauritius #35 with the word 'cancelled' overprinted? Chris

re: Mauritius cancelled

There is a boxed note in SG before the 1878 issues, where the currency changed from sterling to cents and rupees.

"CANCELLED" OVERPRINTS. Following the change of currency in 1878 various issues with face values in sterling were overprinted "CANCELLED" in serifed type and sold as remainders. The stamps involved were Nos. SG51,56/62,67/8,71/2,76,78/b,79 and 81/2.
Examples of such overprints on stamps between Nos.51 and 72 are worth about the same as the prices quoted for used, on Nos.78/b they are worth 12% of the unused price, on No.79 65% and on Nos.81/2 20%.

SG51 = 9d dull purple (1860)
SG56 = 1d purple-brown (1863)
SG57 = 1d brown (1863)
SG58 = 1d bistre (1872)
SG59 = 2d pale blue (1863)
SG60 = 2d bright blue (1863)
SG61 = 3d deep red (1863)
SG61a = 3d dull red (1863)
SG62 = 4d rose (1863)
SG67 = 10d maroon (1872)
SG68 = 1/- yellow (1863)
SG71 = 5/- rosy mauve (1863)
SG72 = 5/- bright mauve (1865)
SG76 = SG51 9d overprinted HALF PENNY (1876)
SG78 = Prepared for use, but not issued. SG51 9d overprinted 1/2 d (in red)
SG78b = same as SG78 but overprint in black
SG79 = SG67 10d rose (colour change) overprinted HALF PENNY and underlined
SG81 = SG71 5/- rosy mauve overprinted One Shilling and underlined
SG82 = SG72 5/- bright mauve overprinted One Shilling and underlined

re: Mauritius cancelled

jillcrow's transcription of the Gibbons catalogue note omits the following text :

"on No. 78 they are worth 5% of the unused price".

I will try to upload a photo of the original note ...

re: Mauritius cancelled

Forgive me, erudite, but I thought that the subject Mauritius cancelled meant that you had started another thread about Covid-19.

Cheers,
