Something I find very interesting.

In the last 12 months I have tried many ways to sell Australia stamps.
I have also found out that what I think will sell does not work at all. I have found out doing the opposite works really well.

Lots of 20 to 30 high value stamps, includes international post stamps, sell very slowly at 30c-25c per stamp.
List them as single high value stamps and they sell well at 69c-$3.99+ per stamp.

Same outcome with KGV's, packets of a 100 stamps at 25c per stamp are very slow to sell. The same stamps as singles sell well for 99c + each.

Packets of 500 different, all sets and lots of high values, at 2c per stamp they would not sell. But a set of 5 letter rate stamps in the packet are 10c per set. As single sets sell well at 99c + per set.

State stamps sold well in lots of 20-30 stamps, 40c per stamp.

I am definitely the odd one out when it comes to buying stamps.

So single stamps with a good image and a correct description is the way to go. I hope it is the same for 2012.

I seems likely that most collectors have most of the common items and would rather pay 99c for a complete set actually needed to fill a page or even the 69c-$3.99+ per stamp to complete a set than the bulk price for a lot that includes lots of duplication.

That applies to just about any country's emmissions and is not peculiar to Aussie stamps.

Thanks for your input cdj. Yes I can see that it is cheaper in the long run to buy singles.

A person from Canada won 13 single sets at $13. I contacted this buyer and said I have a packet of 500 different that includes all the sets and heaps more good stuff and you can have the packet for the same cost. His reply was that stamps with faults go into packets so the damaged stamps can be hidden. With the single sets their is a good image and I can see every stamp that I am buying.

What happened to the person that trades their duplicates. Has friends at a stamp club. A friend down the road. Has on-line forum friends. The gift for the young children etc.

In bundleware I have approx 1.2 million stamps. An image of some of the bundleware. It has grown a bit more since this image was taken. I would be lost without my duplicates.

Image Not Found

The 4 tubs on the floor hold the stock for making the packets from 300 to 1700 different stamps. It is complete for packet numbers wanted.

The stack of tubs on the left hold the general stock from 1966 to 2009.

The stack of tubs on the right hold the stamps from 1966
2009 that are partially sorted. They will all be sorted into general stock &/or stockbooks.

That finishes this stage of the packet making process. All the stock is now in place to start to make the packets themselves. We are going to take a couple of weeks off to freshen up & then get stuck into the packet making. John & family.

Wow! That's a lot of Australian stamps!

The person who said "stamps with faults go into packets so the damaged stamps can be hidden" has obviously had bad experiences with purchasing packets. I for one DO NOT put damaged or faulty stamps into my packets and I know of quite a few others who sell good quality packets with little duplication and no damaged stamps included. My motto is 'Don't send anyone else something you would not want to receive yourself.'

I do agree with you that single stamps and/or complete sets sell better and for a better price than packets do. I for one prefer just to purchase the single stamp I need to fill a blank in my collection.

Packet purchasing is a great way, at a low cost of building up trading or selling stock if you have few duplicates from a particular country to offer others.

Good luck with the packet making.

KG5, an interesting observation on what you find sells and doesn't sell. On the whole I would agree with you. I have noticed though that some things that I would not be interested in sell regular in the SOR auction. A while back one of our members, Railrider I think, was selling mistery bulk lots with no image and very little discription. I was really surprised when they got bids on them almost immediately.

re: to buy/sell stamps singly, in sets, in packets, in kilowae

I tend to mostly buy individual stamps I need... or extremely large lots with THOUSANDS of stamps.

I have never been a buyer of "small lots," and rarely a buyer of sets. Usually I have a couple or more stamps in a set, and I'm not going to buy the entire set AGAIN to get the two higher values I'm missing. I think your sales pattern might be a reflection that many collections are started with a "packet of 500 different" (or something similar), which contains most of the lower values, and then people want to fill in the single higher values they are missing.

When I buy really large "box lots," it's typically with an eye towards looking for varieties and postmarks, and I don't care if there is duplication to the thousands. As a result, I have a similar "bundleware situation" for Denmark and Sweden.

As we are now in the slower time of the year for selling stamps it is interesting that my KGV's listed as single stamps for this week are lucky to have a viewer but the 20 single listed Australia International Post stamps have mostly had 8 views and their are 5 with bids on them with 4.5 days still to go. An interesting experiment that I will continue to work with.
