My name is Francis Tobin and I am a 29 year old male living in canada. I work seasonally treeplanting and other random bush work. I enjoy the outdoors sports and collecting all sorts of things especially stamps now adays. I have inherited a nice collection from my moms side of the family dating back to my great grandpa. My dads side of the family provided one small album too. I am working on making stock books and doubles systems for a bunch of countries right now and picking up some high priced german stamps as well as a few belgium lots.

I plan on being an active member here especially in the winter when i dont work. I want to buy/sell in the auction, make trades and post on the boards regularly.

I have been watching this site for about a month and have enjoyed many of the discussion and find the auction interesting.

I should mention my brother Cyril. We have similar interests and he is 26. Cyril and I collect together

hope to hear from you soon

Welcome Franky and Cyril!
There is much wisdom shared in these pages. The most important thing about this great hobby is the enjoyment of the stamps, the history and the relationships you build with other collectors. And I've learned it's much more affordable than restoring old cars!
Enjoy! THOM

Welcome from me, too, Franky. I do suggest, though, that Cyril acquire his own membership, rather than having two people post under the same pseudonym.

This is an interesting stamp you are using for your avatar, is there a story connected to it?

Welcome to Stamporama, Francis and Tobin. It's not often that we get members from Prince George, which for the uninitiated is a community of about 75,000-ish (maybe bigger than that now) about 800 km north of Vancouver in British Columbia. The only other Prince George member is (username) Wigalso. (We do have several members who live in other communities in British Columbia)

My wife, Susan, and I moved to Prince George in 1973 and taught in the public schools there. We retired in 2001 and moved to Vancouver. It's a great place to live if you can take the winters — in the winter of 1973-74 we had a total snowfall of 12 feet and several weeks of temperatures as low as -40 c. which is the same as -40 f. Motor oil freezes into a semi-liquid goo at that temperature, and your eyelids freeze shut when you blink.

The bonuses of living in Prince George are that it has a good and quite new university, good theatre, good fishing and hunting, lakes all over the place, mountains to hike and climb, rivers to canoe. My favourite activity was cross-country skiing, until arthritis in my hands and feet put a stop to that.

Unfortunately, Prince George doesn't have a stamp club. It did once, the Fort George Stamp Club, named after the first trading post. We had regular meetings for several years, and then one summer the president moved, no one assumed responsibility, and it never met again. There've been a couple of attempts to revive it, without success.

I taught in three schools in Prince George — two elementary and one high school — and sponsored successful stamp clubs in each one. I doubt I could manage that today, not with the competition from digital pastimes. I'm kinda nostalgic about Prince George, but now much prefer my very urban life in Vancouver's West End.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. This site seems too have a great community of active members. Nice PG write up Bobstamp. I had heard about the stamp club here too bad it broke up. I have contacted another PG philatelist name Wayne who collects WW stamps and has a big expensive wmk. detector that I would like to try out.

I like the urban life in Vancouver every once in awhile too Bob and spend atleast a month out of the year in Vancouver often. I have not been to Vancouver since I started collecting seriously but I can't wait to hit some stamp stores (I have never been in one).

Oh ya Rhinelander, the avatar stamp is an early german one (scott #12) worth Scott CV $150.00 with the pen cancel. An actual cancel is more rare and worth $2,400. It is the first stamp that I bought that is worth a decent CV. I actually picked up his long lost (Scott #13 CV $525) big brother too!!

Welcome to Stamporama, F. and T. If you enjoy it only half as much as I do, you will find your membership to be invaluable. The wealth of philatelic knowledge and expertise available on Stamporama's website is boundless and priceless.
